Price low, driving fun high? Perfect. That was the case when the Suzuki SV 650 was launched in 1999. Just over 70 lively horses released, an astonishing ease with which the 190 kilo motorcycle can be wagged across the country road without appearing too agile or restless, economical consumption, good ergonomics for different types of riders and a design that is by no means boring. The fork, which was initially too soft, could be improved with new springs for little money. All of this convinced an enormous number of newcomers and those returning to work at the time. But also old driving foxes looking for a sporty, but fully everyday milling machine. In any case, the 650s sold a good 10,000 times in Germany in the first two years alone!

After the relaunch in 2003 with the new WVBY type, the hype was over, although the renovated mid-range machine was better than the previous model in all respects: injection, better chassis, from 2007 with ABS. But the angular design with the cost-optimized die-cast profile frame initially didn’t appeal to the SV fans that much. And the competition wasn’t sleeping either: Kawasaki came out in 2005 with the lively, equally strong and sexy-looking ER-6. The Suzuki SV 650 sold only 1,500 times this year, and a miserable 500 times in 2008. That meant the end of the German market, and the SV 650 was somewhat forgotten. Good for second-hand hunters, because the following applies all the more: price low, driving fun high.

Among the large number of used offers, there are a comparatively large number of Suzuki SV 650 / S that were unskilled by hand. Unwanted young beginners like to “spice up” their motorcycle, which has been bought cheaply from multiple previous owners, with add-on parts stolen from the Internet. As long as it is not just about rim trim strips, one should rather look twice with such specimens to see whether all parts are registered and properly attached. Especially with the exhaust system
people like to mess about. Since the pot and collector are welded, some SV owners used the saw to install a retrofit silencer – this should be treated with caution! Small annoyance, but common: the ignition lock often gets stuck. The V2 is considered to be very durable, mileage over 50,000 kilometers is not a problem. Pay attention to the clutch and gearbox during the test drive. If there is a problem, it is often only the release mechanism that has moved.
Market situation
The range of used Suzuki SV 650 is enormous, with almost two thirds of the offers being advertised by private sellers. Often, however, overpriced according to the motto: You can give it a try, a place on the Internet marketplace costs nothing at first. For those interested, however, this offers the chance to haggle mercilessly, especially since long journeys to visit are rarely necessary. If that doesn’t suit: Dealers have more realistic prices, but you shouldn’t expect bargains under 1500 euros from commercial providers. SV 650 of the type WVBY from 2003 with only one previous owner and well-documented workshop history offer a great value.
Then mileage of more than 30,000 kilometers is usually not a problem, and such machines are available for a good 2500 euros. From 4000 euros, however, you can hardly sell even well-maintained, ABS-equipped Suzuki SV 650 with a four-digit odometer reading, as there are already decent used copies of the successor Suzuki Gladius for the same money. Bare SV 650 and S version are traded at similar prices. Attention beginners: the market offers a pleasing number of 34 and 48 hp variants.
