Outnumbered by Sykes in the Superpole, Rea got his revenge in the WSBK first round at Laguna Seca. Starting behind the two Kawasaki, the Ducati riders bit the dust, giving Hayden a new podium.

First race Superbike Laguna Seca 2016

Jonathan Rea takes an excellent start and dives in the lead in the descent towards the Andretti hairpin which the "Number One" negotiates too wide … Tom Sykes does not hesitate to take the lead … and a few steps ahead at the end of the first sector !

Behind, "Johnny" struggles to return to a good trajectory and is passed by Chaz Davies. Davide Giugalino is in the wheel of his teammate n ° 7 and ahead of a very compact peloton made up of Nicky Hayden, Xavi Fores, Alex Lowes, Lorenzo Savadori, Michael van den Mark and Niccolo Canepa.

Davies completed a solid first lap and found himself in the backsplash of the Ninja # 66 at the start of the second lap. Rea remains in the wake of the two leaders while Giugliano struggles to stay in touch. Italian No.34 is kept under pressure by Hayden.

From the 3rd lap, the gaps widened within the Top 10: Lowes and Savadori were dropped by Hayden, Fores slightly distance Van den Mark. Alex de Angelis ejects Niccolo Canepa – replacing our dear "Guinters" with the Blues – out of the Top 10.

Visibly quicker than Sykes, Davies applied the brakes at # 66 at the entrance to the third corner. Surprised by this attack, "Major Tom" is passed at the exit of the same curve by his teammate Rea. The latter inherits the reins of the race two turns later. !

Too demanding of his front tire, Davies set off in a high-speed "lowside" and had to abandon the first American round on the 5th lap … His teammate Giugliano therefore climbed to the third step of the podium, behind the inseparable Kawasaki.

As doped by the fall of Davies, Giugliano goes back in the aspiration of the Ninja N ° 66. Honda n ° 69 follows with just two seconds but must be wary of Yamaha n ° 22: Alex Lowes turns a little faster than Nicky Hayden and has the podium in sight.

Sixth on the track, Lorenzo Savadori was overtaken by Michael van den Mark and his Honda n ° 60. Fores is only a few lengths away from the Supersport world champion but must above all watch his rear: De Angelis and Torres do not leave the wake of the private Ducati n ° 12.

At the start of the 11th lap, Jonathan Rea was almost a second ahead of his teammate Tom Sykes, still chased by Davide Giugliano. Nicky Hayden occupies a distant fourth place (five seconds behind the Italian) but not lonely for all that: Alex Lowes closely follows the "creature of Laguna Seca".

A few lengths behind Yamaha n ° 22, Lorenzo Savadori continued his superb race and kept Michael van den Mark at bay. The Dutchman is one second behind the n ° 32 Aprilia and nearly three seconds ahead of Xavi Fores. De Angelis and Torres continue to fight for ninth place.

Just before the halfway point, Davide Giugliano disappears from the control screens … The second Bologna factory driver has just fallen! The two Kawasaki therefore parade alone in the lead, far ahead of Hayden who will have to defend his place on the podium dearly against Lowes, Savadori and Van den Mark..

Ten laps from the end, all the (tele) spectators’ attention is focused on the magnificent "finish" which looms between the four outsiders. But in the next loop, Sykes changed the game by taking advantage of an error – the second in this race – in the famous Cork Screw.

Too generous on the corkscrew, Rea passes over the dirt – and the footsteps of Rossi and Marquez! – and yields the lead to Sykes. The English Ninja then tries to raise the tone but can not outrun his best Northern Irish enemy.

Able to maintain more speed in the curves, Rea passed Sykes in the first undulating portion of the circuit. Jonathan seems to have a little more in the grip than Tom but must be wary: there are still six laps to go…

The fight for the third step of the podium intensified in the very last laps. Overtaken by Lowes and Van den Mark, Savadori lost with five laps to go. But the battle continues for Alex and Michael who are still a few lengths away from Nicky !

Interposed between the two Fireblades, Lowes whips his R1 as much as he can. The Yamaha seems a little less stable under acceleration, giving rise to some impressive glides and bounces of the No. 22 out of a corner. However, it is at the entrance of the first hairpin that VDM slips his Honda under Lowes’ Yamaha..

Far ahead, Jonathan Rea moved away irresistibly from Tom Sykes in the last two laps. The 2015 world champion soars to his first victory at Laguna Seca. Thanks to "Major Tom", Kawasaki pockets its seventh double of the season, the fourth in a row !

Chased by his teammate, Nicky Hayden is attacked in the last bend! Michael van den Mark delays his last braking as much as possible, turns in front of his teammate but cannot grasp the rope and completely misses his restart…

Barely embarrassed by the unsuccessful attempt – hazardous ?! – of her fiery teammate, the "Kentucky Legend" has only to open the throttle wide to climb on her national podium! The Top 5 is completed by Michael van den Mark and Alex Lowes.
