Yamaha XV 950 (Bolt) 2015

Here is the kind of little scoundrel who will be desired in customs. Or rather among the bobbers. Stripped look, maximum simplification, surly spirit and pickaxe head, the new XV 950 from Yamaha completely shakes up the manufacturer’s range…. and others. And by the same disturb one of the icons of the segment, the Harley 883 Sportster. Presented for the States a short time ago under the name of Bolt, this machine is an agitator, and it will show !

This XV 950 gives a nice boost in the series of the Japanese manufacturer. With this compact profile and the aplomb of a brawler, we are a million miles from the long XVS cruisers and their senatorial ancestors Dragstar. You have to go back to the time of 535 Virago to find this cheeky attitude.
At Uncle Sam’s, his name is Bolt; and this first name suits him so well that I will continue to name it that way. It does not bother you ?!? So, Bolt, a young dog crazy about metal and twin, arrives on the old continent with a silhouette that hits the mark, a style that strikes, and some small effects to show off. Petal brake discs, a brash round LED taillight, minimalist mudguards; and if you opt for the R version, an imitation suede saddle and shock absorbers with separate cylinder.

Is the Bolt derived from the XVS 950? What a slab. Aside from the engine (revised for this new case), the Yam bobber has offered its own definition. Chrome, large handlebars and ostentation, everything went to the dumpster. Equipped with a new chassis with double steel cradle frame, 41mm fork and two side shocks, the Bolt is a sparrow compared to the cousin XVS. It’s 145mm shorter, weighs 31kg less, and its wheelbase of 1,570mm is 115mm shorter. The machine announces much more agility than the Midnight Star, especially with a profile of tires much less heavy: 100/90 – 19 at the front and 150/80 – 16 at the rear. Nothing exceptional on the braking side. We stay in the spirit of the essential with a disc of 298 mm per wheel, associated with a 2-piston caliper on the bow side and a single-piston caliper at the stern. It can be cleverly supplemented with an optional ABS (standard on the R).

Get back on the back! Look at this pot! Or should I say that big, manly gun. We can also talk about the air filter cover, not discreet either. And so much the better! The Bolt is not here to hide in the shadows.
Side engine, the 942 cm3 is reworked especially at the level of the admission. Its air filter is 15% smaller than that of the XVS. We had to split new maps and in the end, we find 52 cannons, or 2 less (not very serious) but an improvement in torque. With 8.1 mkg, that’s 0.3 of gain at the same speed of 3000 rpm. Ah, before I forget, the engineers took the opportunity to integrate a rubber shock absorber in the clutch to smooth the gear changes.

Bottom saddle, with a 690 mm in the standards of the category, the “Sportster” Yam promises sensations. The technical choice of the rear axle does not commit us to be optimistic for comfort (to be put into perspective in the R version). We note that the transmission belt, 21 mm wide, is the thinnest ever used by Yamaha.

A few small accessories will be available to spice up the 950 Bolt, such as an Akrapovic exhaust, a screen, a Stiletto saddle, wire wheels, a spring saddle (hellish style), fork guards, etc … With this model, Yamaha offers a noticeably daring custom, ready to abuse the HD 883 initiatory. It does not want to make any concessions; and besides, he does not have to do.
