The R1 family has now been around for almost two decades. Sports fans with a keen calculation can now set their sights on the Yamaha YZF-R1 (type RN22) from 2009 onwards. Our tips for second-hand buyers.

Despite quick model changes, the super sports business is actually characterized by consistency. A Fireblade remains a Fireblade even after the update, the Kilo-Gixxer a Kilo-Gixxer, regardless of whether it is K1, 5 or 7. This has the advantage for regular customers of this particular series: Even after switching to a new one, a lot remains emotionally the same. The R1 community must have made the switch to the RN22 all the harder. At first sight, even the die-hard fan block was shocked by the design of the new 2009 vintage: The front of this new one Yamaha YZF-R1 with the projection headlights à la Glupschauge – that doesn’t work at all. And this rear section with jellyfish underseat silencers – is it really still state-of-the-art? Now design is one thing, and usually the eye quickly gets used to the new design language after the “shocking moment”.

Technical advancement almost revolutionary
In the meantime, dealers agree that hardly anyone bumps into the packaging anymore. Much more decisive – actually more revolutionary – was the cut on the technical side. Anyone who expected the usual row of four purring when pressing the starter of the RN22 will almost tumble off the taut seat cushion in amazement. With a 90-degree crank pin offset and an appropriately coordinated firing order, the R1 suddenly growled, rumbled and rumbled like a real V4. They didn’t just want to score acoustically. The aim was to make the RN22 type much more suitable for everyday use. And it actually succeeded. In comparison, the Yamaha YZF-R1 grabs from 2009, especially around the bottom and in the middle of the speed, noticeably more courageously than its predecessors with a conventional four-cylinder layout, which are much more cautious in this area. The 22 series can also convince on the chassis side – all in all a great package for hobby racers AND home track junkies. Where there is a lot of light, there is still shade. B. already has the Fireblade of the same year. And Yamaha won’t bring traction control until the 2012 update. But used it is not yet available cheaply.

Low price level. The first two years of this Yamaha YZF-R1 are just approaching the 7,000 threshold. But beware of dubious offers that look very nice, but are strikingly cheap. There is a great danger of getting a blinded fall-R1.

Medium price level. Anyone who wants to invest in a well-maintained second-hand superbike over the long term should invest at least 9,000 euros in the acquisition. The RN22 offers in this price range usually score with first ownership, checkbook maintenance and some high-end extras.

High price level. For the model update from 2012 with traction control, five-digit investments have to be made, private offers are moving towards the 10,000 mark, dealers still charge from 11,000 euros upwards, but score points with guarantee and financing options.
Facelift
- 2009: Market launch of the completely revised Yamaha YZF-R1, type RN22, as the successor to the RN19 (2007 to 2008 in the range). New four-cylinder engine with 90 degree crank pin offset (“Big Bang”), electronic engine management with three adjustable driving modes. New Deltabox aluminum frame with magnesium rear frame and new aluminum rear swing arm. New cladding, projection spotlights with movable screen. Colors: white, blue, black. Price: 15,950 euros. Sales in Germany: 1,271 pieces.
- 2010: Technology, equipment and colors unchanged, price reduction to 15,495 euros. Sales in D: 665 pieces.
- 2011: No changes, sales in D: 408 pieces.
- 2012: First major facelift. Traction control, injector with changed spray angle. Rear central spring strut with modified spring and rate. Fork bridge revised, new exhaust end caps with side heat protection, driver footrests with changed profile, new fairing front with changed headlights and LED position lights, clear glass turn signal glasses. Available as the “50th Anniversary Edition” (15,995 euros) in the special color white as well as in the standard colors white, blue and gray. Price 15,750 euros. Sales in Germany: 448 pieces.
- 2013: Technology, equipment and colors unchanged, price rises to 15,995 euros. Sales in Germany: 288 pieces.
- 2014: Last model year of type RN22, successor RN32 in the range from 2015. Sales in Germany: 186 pieces.

Dominik Klein (43). The Yamaha dealer from Dillingen / Saar also swears by the concept of the Yamaha YZF-R1 as a tuner, but warns against all too naive used purchases.
MOTORCYCLE: The die-hard fans of the Yamaha YZF-R1 were initially very reluctant to accept the RN22. How has the picture changed?
Dominik Klein: The RN22 has now fully arrived on the market, and the demand for used vehicles is correspondingly high. What comes in is quickly sold again. Of course, many traditional customers were put off at the beginning. Anyone who, as a dealer, has put the Yamaha YZF-R1 in the showroom with a slim license plate holder and stylish accessory exhaust has done exactly the right thing. The RN22 was not a sure-fire success, as a retailer you had to invest time and make a little effort. But then it went well in sales.
MOTORCYCLE: It cost almost 16,000 euros new, but even the first 22s are hard to come by for less than 8,000. Your price forecast?
Dominik Klein: At first the prices really tumbled and the loss in value was already very high – of course that had to do with the subdued demand. In the meantime, however, the prices are very stable – this also fits in with the value of the Yamaha YZF-R1. The owners remain loyal to her for a long time. If you want to shop for less than 8,000 euros, you also have to be very careful!
MOTORCYCLE: why?
Dominik Klein: Then there is a risk of getting into a rocked-down racetrack R1. Despite German papers mostly from other EU countries, with incomprehensible history and unknown number of previous owners. Traces of falls are skilfully concealed, often inferior or unsuitable parts have been retrofitted. RN22s appear again and again with replacement parts from the predecessor RN19.
MOTORCYCLE: How can those interested in used best protect themselves from this?
Dominik Klein: At the authorized dealer, the chassis number can be used to quickly find out where the motorcycle is coming from. By then, at the latest, non-original parts would also be noticed. In any case, you should pay attention to a fully stamped checkbook when you are on site. So you can be sure that recalls and modifications have been made.
MOTORCYCLE: Are there typical problems with the RN22?
Dominik Klein: Not really. First and foremost, it is important to search for hidden traces of a fall, e.g. B. on the swing arm or under the fairing – keyword: dented radiator! Blown cylinder head gaskets or worn timing chain tensioners can occasionally occur. But that is more the exception than the rule.
