MOTORRAD volunteer Fabian Dresler snatched the Triumph Street Triple from our long-term test fleet and mingled with the participants of the MOTORRAD action team curve school at Baden Airpark – after all, driver training suits everyone, there is always something to learn.

Meanwhile, the confessed fair-weather drivers have pushed their sweetheart out of the back corner of the garage and brushed off the dust. The motorcycle season has long since begun. So that all planned and unplanned, small and large tours remain confident and above all fall-free, it is worthwhile to familiarize yourself with the bike and your own skills again and again. A motorcycle training on closed-off terrain with personal feedback from professional instructors is ideal – whether for the ambitious country road athlete, the leisurely cruiser or the professional cyclist from the MOTORRAD editorial team.
The program at the action team curve school: slalom, circular track, handling course in the morning and intensive training of the ideal line in the afternoon. That promises a lot of fun with our long-term test Streety, it is the perfect device for the narrow airfield circuit.
Motorcycle training for every level
But the curve school does not simply heat up. The motto is: Slowly and safely get fast. When you first look over the parking lot, it becomes clear that all types of motorcycles and motorcyclists are welcome here. Super sports car owners wearing one-piece suits park next to endurance travelers in Gore Tex clothing and chopper drivers in classic leather costumes. Here everyone can find like-minded colleagues in their own performance area.
Review of self-assessment
In advance, all participants have assigned themselves to one of the four groups, from moderate to very fast. Whether this self-assessment is realistic is determined during the sighting drive. Means: Do a few laps around the course so that the instructors can assess the level. Afterwards, if necessary, re-sorting is carried out in order to put together homogeneous groups. However, the division is not final – if you learn faster during the day, you can switch to the next faster group at any time.
Don’t forget to smile on the slalom course
It’s off after the sighting drive with the slalom. Here instructor Bernd reminds the participants: Shift your weight correctly, take your upper body with you, press on the handlebars to turn in, and take your other hand completely off the grip for exercise. And of course the legendary eye guidance: “Wherever you look, you go,” says Bernd with a laugh and adds: “Sounds clumsy, but if Rossi only looked at Marquez in front of him and not at him, he could never overtake him.” An ambitious comparison, but it works great. So go straight through the pylons again and consciously pay attention to the direction of view. Oh yes, very important: “Don’t forget to smile,” Bernd remembers. In the meantime, that happens all by itself without having to think about it.
Lean angle training on the circular path
The next station: circular path. Sounds like a lame basic driving exercise from driving school, but it is the best way to safely train posture and banking. In endless cornering, posture errors can be safely discovered and trained. Streety slowly feels her way into deeper regions, is stable on a board and gives her rider more and more security. In the future, he can still take care to get the slight “question mark” out of the upper body in left arcs, i.e. lean more in the direction of the incline with the upper body.
Acceptance on the handling course
With renewed confidence, it goes on to the handling course. Now it’s about the right choice of line and posture. The instructor shows what it should look like and we go behind. In the debriefing there is then personal assistance. Shift your upper body further here, bend your elbow there. There is general satisfaction with the progress and the participants are exchanging ideas with one another more and more loosely. Ask everyone: “How much have you ridden this year?” The range of answers is just as wide as that of the motorcycles. From “I always drive, even through the whole winter” to “The way here was the first kilometers for me this year”, everything is included.
Video analysis included
After lunch we leave the basic exercises behind and continue to hone our posture and line. Instructor Sven draws the ideal line including acceleration and braking points on a route map. When studying video between turns, everyone can see the learning process for themselves. Here and there you look into perplexed faces – it is hard to believe how far your own perception of the posture while driving deviates from what can be seen on the screen. That motivates to step up again in the next round. Instead of just driving behind, instructor Sven now lets us drive in front of him. We have to find the line ourselves. Not that easy at all! We therefore refrain from free driving and stick to Sven, who is already setting a sporty pace and get even more input in return.
Progress and satisfaction
The day with the MOTORRAD action team is over much too quickly. After the four turns in the afternoon, the absorption capacity is also exhausted and the exhaustion is clearly noticeable. The satisfaction is all the greater. We don’t find anyone who doesn’t feel safer than in the morning or who claims to have learned nothing. Many stay one more night to go through the program again the following day – then of course with higher goals.
The MOTORRAD volunteer and the Streety head back to the editorial office on the same evening. Ross and rider have gained a lot of new experiences and are now looking forward to more from the MOTORRAD action team – the next perfection training is already marked in the calendar.
