Summer auction at Bonhams
34,000 euros for a Honda VFR 750 R RC 30

At the beginning of July the big Bonhams summer auction for motorcycles and everything to do with it starts. Highest price achieved: 341,000 euros for an AJS from 1946.

Exactly 811 lots went under the hammer in Bonhams’ summer auction this year. It started on July 2nd. The auction lasted three days, not all lots were sold, but: A Hyosung GV 650 Aquila from 2008 was actually included, sold for 1,069 euros. When scrolling over that was probably the only slip-up in the huge selection of fine motorcycles built between 1905 and 2013. The prices include the Bonhams fees, which are between 15 and 27.5 percent per motorcycle and staggered according to the bid. Value added taxes are also added, as are transport and customs.

The most expensive machine

The lot with the predicted highest bids was an AJS factory machine from 1946. The E90 with 497 cubic meters should bring in between 290,000 and 350,000 euros, in the end the hammer fell at 340,975 euros, including hand money for Bonhams. The history is documented and the machine has probably driven the TT several times, but not won. According to the pictures, the AJS is in top condition and, with lot number 33, was one of the first motorcycles to be auctioned.

The cheapest machine

A Yamaha TZR 250 was supposed to go for a good 700 to 930 euros and was in terrible condition as a restoration object with 17,000 km. Surprise at the knockdown: the yam brought in 1,872 euros, twice as much as expected. Somebody should be happy there.

The youngest model

One of the Aprilias RRV 450 racing machines on offer is only eight years old. It is one of around 50 machines built by Ian Newton for the British racing series at the time and is based on the RXV 450 cross machine. The V-engine delivers up to 54 hp to the bike and some of these converted machines weigh only 118 kilograms. Lot 660 was supposed to bring in between 6,400 and 7,600 euros, but in the end it was only 5,616 euros including fees. Someone should be disappointed.

2013 Aprilia RRV 450: 6,400 to 7,600 euros.

The oldest model

The oldest model at the auction is no less than 121 years old and is actually not a motorcycle, but also not a car: the Mignonette Luap moves four wheels with 2.25 bouton horsepower, has no roof and should bring 52,000 to 64,000 euros. Unfortunately, there was no buyer for the old piece.

First, second and …! Who would buy a motorcycle at a real auction??

I don’t do anything else.

A little thrill would be great.

Conclusion

Exciting idea to buy the next classic car at auction. The first glances at the machines usually show a good condition with a traceable history and matching numbers of the frame and gearbox. The envisaged price ranges appear realistic, the fee for the auction house is added.
