Croce Domini – Lake Garda Adventure Tour

Tour tip

This tour leads into the alpine hinterland in Lombardy. The highlights in the truest sense of the word are the two pass heights on Croce Domini and Maniva.

Even in midsummer it shouldn’t be overcrowded with tourists, because the narrow mountain roads with tricky switchbacks tend to scare off motorists. The change between lovely excursion destinations such as Lake Ledro and Lake Idro and the rugged mountains is breathtaking in some places. Because of the curve overdose and the sometimes steep and unpaved sections, the (at least) long day tour is more suitable for advanced hikers.

route: approx. 185 km / Travel time: approx. 5 hours (without breaks), 1.5 days with a stopover with an overnight stay on Maniva Pass.

Start at the ferry port in Riva, Via Giacamo CIS ➤ die SS45 to the north, then to the SS240 Change out of town ➤ Always keep in the direction of Lake Ledro (until then the route is of no motorcycling tourist value) ➤ You can quickly leave the small Lake Ledro on the left in two ways and follow it SS240 further west.

After about 20 kilometers you will find the small biker bar Firi on the right, mostly easy to identify on parked motorbikes, a short stop here, inexpensive and decent espresso and Panini ➤ drive through the village of Storo and then left onto the SS237 Direction Darzo and Lodrone (caustic section with speed controls). ➤ The SS237 Continue to Lake Idro to the junction to Bagolino or the sign for the Passo di Crocedomini ➤ der SP669 after Bagolino follow to the north ➤ there follows a grandiose, steep mountain route with very narrow hairpin bends, road conditions sometimes moderate, in the upper part of the pass comparatively narrow road width, no guard rails; Alpine environment with the usual dangers (animals running freely, dirt on the road, etc.), challenging for novice drivers.

Take a break at the Rifugio di Passo Crocedomini, a popular inn with motorcyclists, in the summer there is a full parking lot at the weekend despite the remoteness, as at Bikertreff ➤ do not follow the normal, asphalt pass road, but drive behind the rifugio into the inconspicuous gravel road ➤ gravel route with road motorcycles (slowly ), loose ground ends after a few kilometers ➤ great mountain panoramas invite you to take photo stops, especially at the level of the abandoned satellite station.

On the SP345 continue in the direction of the Maniva pass top ➤ at the top of the pass various options for refreshments and overnight stays (e.g. Hotel Spa Dosso Alto) ➤ the SP345 Leave now and drive right past the buildings and the chapel onto the gravel farm road.

Attention, now it’s getting adventurous!

The mini-road leads down in one lane towards Anfo and resembles a hiking trail. Turning with a heavy machine is difficult or impossible in some places. The coarse gravel ends after a few kilometers, the then concreted path only allows low speeds; Recommendation: inexperienced mountaineers should alternatively take the regular asphalt road from Maniva pass to Bagolino and from there to Lake Idro to Anfo (good lake view of the peninsula, possibly take a break at the lake) ➤ on the SS237 continue on Lake Idro ➤ behind the lake SP58 turn off the road via Lemprato uphill to the east in the direction of Capovalle (great curves, easy to drive) ➤ SP58 to branch to SP9, There turn right to Bollone, there snack is possible in the bar Al Muli ➤ SP9 down to Lake Valvesitino and on to Gargagno (well-developed route, grippy asphalt) ➤ from Gargagno back onto the riverside road SS45 to and back to the ferry port in Riva (approx. 30 km).
