MOTORCYCLE tour tip – Zillertal Alps tour
MOTORCYCLE tour tip – Zillertal Alps tour
Reservoir trip
Tour tip
Embedded in a spectacular natural world with over 70 three-thousand-meter peaks, several large reservoirs are hidden in the Zillertal. But there are more reasons to scour the beautiful holiday region on two wheels: for example great curves.
Thorsten Dentges

The valley road, which is overcrowded and not very attractive at peak times, is a necessary evil on this tour in order to get to the really beautiful sections of the route. For example: Zillertal-Hohenstrabe, Gerlospass, Schlegeis-Speicher, Zillergrund. Because with every meter of altitude, the driver’s mood increases, when curve after curve and a beautiful view down into the valley follows the other.
route: 275 km / Travel time: approx. 9-10 hours (only with short breaks), 1.5 days with a relaxed ride and the option to incorporate the Hintertux glacier as an excursion

> Optimal meeting and starting point: Zillertal Tourismus office (maps and information material) in Schlitters
> across the river Ziller, then north to a first class “Welcome round” Direction Bruck, St. Gertraudi and east to Reith im Alpbachtal
> over winding, small asphalt strips to the district of Hygna and up to the Reither Kogel (attention: it is easy to get lost!), then Kerschbaumer Sattel (great view of the Zillertal at the Bruckerberg)
> Follow the small mountain road to Hart and again over the Ziller at Haselstein. Not very attractive through the densely built-up valley to Ried
> Follow the signs to the Zillertal-Hohenstrabe and immerse yourself again in the beautiful alpine world via the Riedberg district
> Follow the narrow and steep mountain road (be careful with oncoming traffic!), rest and beautiful views possible at the gondola station mountain huts, e.g. B. Almgasthof Zirmstadl at 1800 m
> continue on Hohenstrabe via Zellberg to the junction at the feeder (which leads down into the valley to Zell am Ziller), then continue right on Hohenstrabe to the Melchboden snack station (2020 m)
> Follow the alpine road and finally downhill to Hippach in the main valley
> Via Ramsberg to the entrance to the Gerlospass and follow the well-developed, (depending on the traffic) easy-going state road 165 to the top of the pass (1507 m)
> Turn off the main route in the direction of Krimml and Krimml Waterfalls and follow the wonderfully curved route to the tie-knot curve, there at the parking lot behind the mini-tunnel: great view of the waterfalls!
> at Wald im Pinzgau back on the main route 165 to the west along the Salzach
> At the crossroads in the direction of Gerlos do not take the 165, but take the Hinterwaldberg road towards Speicher Durlabboden, at the end of the road (great mountain scenery!) rest or turn in the Wildgerlostal car park and return to 165
> over Gerlos pass to Zell am Ziller and on 169 southwards past Mayrhofen
Optionally end the day tour temporarily and include an excursion to the Hintertux Glacier / Nature Ice Palace
> Behind Ginzling through a picturesque gorge to the Schlegeis Alpenstrabe toll station (10 euros / motorcycle; traffic lights with 15-minute timer, single-lane 800 meters in altitude to the dam, fun route)
> at the imposing Schlegeisspeicher Wahnsinns-Alpenblick and good rest, adventure and refreshment opportunities: z. B. Dam wall climbing, cable car action, fishing hut (10 min walk)
> back on the 169 until shortly before Mayrhofen, stay there in the direction of Brandberg and follow the gorge road to the Zillergrund to the east
> just behind the Barenbadalm (good for coffee & Cake) the route ends in front of a barrier, good view of the Zillergrundl-Speicher dam
> turn around and back to Mayrhofen
> On the 169 through the Zillertal to the north and let the tour roll out easily
