The SC59 in the MOTORRAD endurance test: During the 50,000 kilometers, the Honda showed hardly any weaknesses. You only saw it when dismantling – here the cylinder head ready for replacement with worn valve guides and leaky exhaust valves. An isolated case?

The fire blade is worth it as a used one?
One of the most illustrious names in the Superbike league for more than two decades. In our used advice service, we are targeting the latest Honda Fireblade type SC59 from year of construction 2008.

You meet the nicest people on a Honda. Do you still remember the legendary advertising slogan of the Japanese manufacturer from the 1960s? Originally designed for the cute Super Cub, but basically you could still use it for the mighty Honda Fireblade. Because despite the brutal key data (e.g. 178 hp or 199 kilos), Honda’s superbike is anything but a vehicle that you associate with the primal scream, gold chains and porn glasses.

The currently most recent, i.e. seventh generation of the Honda Fireblade – model code SC59 – does not look good either. Even with wild Repsol war paint based on the MotoGP factory fleet, the 1000 series looks like a fine pinstripe thread for distinguished gentleman racers. Anyone who gets into the saddle of the SC59, which will be available from 2008, will immediately feel the Fireblade DNA. Although the designers have now voted the new one more sharply for the stooped fraction compared to its predecessors SC 50 (from 2002) and SC57 (from 2004).
A spicy portion of suitability for everyday use included
Up until now, Honda’s sports program was known (which was also appreciated by the owner) for the fact that it was not radically geared towards uncompromising times, but always had a tasty portion of suitability for everyday use in the luggage. Circuit yes, but a Honda Fireblade should be fit for the fast-forward weekend even with the reel on. In the first 59ers, a little more ability to suffer was initially announced (unfortunately). It only got better – i.e. more comfortable – with the 2014 facelift.
In the competitive environment, the Honda Fireblade has a difficult position at the latest with the appearance of the powerful and well-equipped BMW S 1000 RR. But despite the PS deficit and (still) missing traction control, it still scores today with delicious technology gimmicks such as its unique electric steering damper and the finely regulated “brake-by-wire” composite ABS. The price is also particularly nice. Further tumbling is not ruled out towards autumn. And when do we meet you on this Honda?
Market situation

EZ 03/2008, 40,900 km, 1st hand, including workshop check, one year guarantee, 5990 EUR.
It is always frightening how cheaply the technically delicate high-tech grenades are being traded after just a few years. Euro 4 will depress prices even further.
5590 EUR
Example: EZ 03/2008, 40,900 km, 1st hand, including workshop check, one year guarantee
The range of dealers from Hamburg is impressive. First edition of the Honda Fireblade type SC59 in elegant white at a discount rate.
from 6000 euros
Example ad: 32,564 km, EZ 01/2009, HU new, full service history and accident-free, various extras (rear wheel fenders, Rizoma license plate holder and indicators, crash pads, gear indicator), 6590 euros (dealer offer from Ba-Wu)
Low price level. The first vintage of the Honda Fireblade type SC59 is just scratching the 6000 mark. Interested parties sometimes have to accept high mileages (30,000 and more) or small quirks (e.g. due to falling over). ABS versions only appear very rarely.
from 7500 euros
Example ad: 10,025 km, EZ 07/2009, tricolor, HU new, full service history, 1st hand, ABS, alarm system, crash pads, rear conversion, Kellermann indicators, tires as good as new, central stand, VB 7750 euros (private offer from Brandenburg)
Medium price level. Most of the offers. For interested parties this means – plenty of choice and plenty of need for discussion, e.g. B. for tough price negotiations. Everyone should find their dream blade here (e.g. in Repsol design and / or with ABS and a mileage of less than 20,000 km).
from 9500 euros
Example ad: 3500 km, EZ 04/2015, tricolor, new HU, 1st hand, full service history, ABS, 9900 euros (dealer offer from Ba-Wu)
High price level. Bargain hunters watch out! In the coming weeks, prices will tumble again sharply here. Especially when Honda dealers (have to) sell their Euro 3 fleet. Already now there are almost brand new Honda Fireblades, hardly run in and with a guarantee of 35 percent below the list!

Interview with the Fireblade expert Rainer Friedmann
Rainer Friedmann

Rainer Friedmann (42). The administrator (nickname “Kraftrad”) of the more than 25,000 member strong community www.fireblade-forum.de on the strengths and weaknesses of the Honda Fireblade SC59.
MOTORCYCLE: Rainer, what is the best argument to opt for a second-hand Fireblade of the type SC59 right now?
Rainer Friedmann: For relatively little money, you can get a top super sports car, with which you can have a lot of fun, which is still an eye-catcher and which will remain loyal to you for a very long time.
MOTORCYCLE: And then what speaks against the purchase?
Rainer Friedmann: You will lose out at the regulars’ table, as there are better racing machines on paper.
MOTORCYCLE: What do the members of the Fireblade forum particularly value at the SC59?
Rainer Friedmann: The timelessly beautiful design, the excellent workmanship and quality as well as the playful handling and agility.
MOTORCYCLE: What should those interested in used equipment pay attention to when viewing?
Rainer Friedmann: It starts with the visual inspection of the radiator fins, because they suffer from falling rocks every now and then. Problems can arise from retrofitted and poorly adjusted automatic gearshifts on the racetrack – gears one to three do not always like that under full load. Some blades use more oil than usual, indicator is black discolored exhaust. When converting license plate brackets, check the rear fairing at the rear corners, because they tend to tear when installed at an angle. What do the ABS cables and sensors look like on the front wheel, which are often damaged when the tires are not changed properly? Basically you should ask about ABS malfunctions: Has the battery ever been drawn empty or did the control display light up every now and then? The system does not forgive negligence such as delayed brake fluid changes. It is also interesting to know when the valves were set or when the 24,000 or 48,000 service is due. Because these are particularly expensive customer services!
MOTORCYCLE: Your personal tip is a SC59…
Rainer Friedmann: …In which all customer services were properly carried out and wear parts were exchanged. So kilometers play less of a role. Personally, I would tend to go for a standard blade that has run between 12,000 and 17,000 km and costs a maximum of 9,000 euros. If possible with a sporty license plate holder, Akrapovic pot – is legal and sounds best -, MRA or Honda racing disc, LSL brake and clutch lever, short carbon rear wheel cover and pillion cover.
The competition
BMW S 1000 RR (from 2009) – She came, saw and conquered. The Munich Superbike immediately took power in the area. Top: equipment and performance.
- Four-cylinder in-line engine, 193 hp, weight 208 kg, 0–100 km / h 3.1 seconds, top speed 299 km / h, consumption 5.9 liters, from 7500 euros
Kawasaki ZX-10R (from 2007/2010) – Green radical proposal. Ninjas have never been suitable for everyday use. But always powerful. From 2010 with 200 hp.
- Four-cylinder in-line engine, 188 hp, weight 210 kg, 0–100 km / h 3.2 seconds, Vmax 298 km / h, consumption 5.7 liters, from 6,000 euros
Suzuki GSX-R 1000 (from 2009) – The times when the Gixxer was the parade horse (K5 / K6) are long gone. But: unbeatable price / performance ratio
- Four-cylinder in-line engine, 185 hp, weight 208 kg, 0-100 km / h 3.2 seconds, Vmax 295 km / h, consumption 5.1 liters, from 5000 euros.
Yamaha YZF-R1 (from 2008) – In the meantime, the combination of racing competence plus everyday usability has made the Honda contestable.
- Four-cylinder in-line engine, 182 hp, weight 214 kg, 0–100 km / h 3.2 seconds, Vmax 285 km / h, consumption 5.9 liters, from 5500 euros
