New motorcycle registrations in the UK
Small scooters and motorcycles popular
With a minus of 2.6 percent, only minimally fewer motorcycles and scooters were newly registered in the United Kingdom in the pandemic year 2020.

The British motorcycle manufacturers association MCIA (Motorcycle Industry Association) reports a minus of only 2.6 percent for the two-wheeler market in the pandemic year 2020. The markets of the United Kingdom, i.e. Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as well as all displacement classes of motorized two- and three-wheelers are taken into account here. In total, the market counted 104,612 new registrations in the past year, 107,408 in 2019.
Composition of the UK total two-wheeler market
- 0 – 50 cm³: 8,212 new registrations
- 51 – 125 cm³: 38,897 new registrations
- 126 – 650 cm³: 20,077 new registrations
- 651 – 1000 cm³: 19,713 new registrations
- Over 1000 cm³: 17,713 new registrations
Scooters and naked bikes are the most popular
In 2020, a total of 96,539 motorcycles were newly registered. The British lump everything here that has a displacement of at least 125 cm³ – including scooters and trikes. Overall, the market in this class is 3.9 percent below the previous year. Most of them belong to the naked bikes category and the scooters follow in second place:
- Naked bikes: 31,794 new registrations
- Scooter: 22,232 new registrations
- Adventure Sport: 17,047 new registrations
- Super sports car: 7,746 new registrations
- Chopper / Cruiser: 7,187 new registrations
- Trail / Enduro: 6,443 new registrations
- Sports tourers: 2,320 new registrations
- Tourer: 1,614 new registrations
- Other: 156 new registrations
Small motorcycles with electric drive at the front
However, the two-wheeler market in the United Kingdom is reporting significant losses; there is even a segment that has seen strong growth: scooters and mopeds up to 50 cm³ displacement are up 14.6 percent in 2020 compared to the previous year. Possibly an effect of the individual traffic that has come more into focus as a result of the pandemic. In absolute numbers: 7,126 units were newly registered in this class. The most popular small scooter in the UK in 2020 was an electric scooter – the Yadea C-Like (97 pieces). The most popular moped, the Sur-Ron Light Bee (24 pieces), also runs purely electrically.
Conclusion
A minus of 3.9 percent for two-wheelers from 125 cm³ displacement is clear, but in view of a pandemic year it is almost a reason to be happy. The scooters and mopeds were able to cushion something with a growth of 14.6 percent. But it is also clear that this only helps those manufacturers who also have something to offer in this vehicle class.
