Matriculation examination
With the debut of the Mille, Aprilia passed the maturity test as a motorcycle manufacturer. However, in addition to a coherent concept, customer satisfaction also requires a solid service partner.
Peter Limmert
04/04/2002
The start of the RSV mille from Aprilia The manufacturer from the Venetian Noale, who was previously only successful as a scooter manufacturer, succeeded surprisingly excellently, as the expectations of the professional world and the Italofreaks were rather cautiously reserved compared to the motorcycle manufacturer, which had previously only attracted niche models such as the travel enduro Pegaso or the extravagant Moto 6.5.
But what Aprilia presented with the 60-degree V-Twin, manufactured by Rotax in Gunskirchen, Austria, after a long series production run and design studies from 1998 onwards, amazed the industry and quickly many drivers as well. From the first tests, the potent twin knew how to put itself in the limelight. The men from Noale turned out to be the Prussians among the Italian manufacturers: In addition to the engine with a respectable 118 hp, the chassis shone with high reliability. Of course, small weaknesses emerged during MOTORRAD’s 50,000-kilometer endurance test, but that’s quite normal for the first two years of a completely new design.
Aprilia reacted to the incidents and customer criticism and from 2001 presented a heavily revised model (see profile page 173), which is of course still too new to buy a cheap used vehicle. But already in the years up to 2000 the owners enjoy their unusual saucer. Conclusion: Far cheaper than Ducati and full of character than the inconspicuous, solid, but much more boring V2 range from Honda, the VTR 1000.
Without any delay, the Austrian twin converts the movements of the throttle grip into propulsion with an unmistakable sound. Despite two balancer shafts, the engine produces robust vibrations with increasing speed, which can be annoying on longer stages. The pronounced load change reactions are also annoying, especially in tight corners. The neutrality with which the Italian, on the other hand, masters both fast, long curves and tighter hairpin bends is amazing. Precise turning, an exact curve radius and effortless change of lean angle with physical effort are her strengths.
The upside-down fork and shock absorber each have a wide and useful adjustment range. The very tight basic setting prevents rocking even on poor terrain. Nevertheless, comfort is not neglected. The front brake system on some copies of the first series was in need of improvement: it was difficult to adjust and the manual force required was too great. From 2001 Aprilia took this criticism to heart, the new system is adaptable, the old system can be improved (see box Improvement, page 175). Sometimes there was also criticism about chain whips when the low-speed throttle pulls around 3000 / min.
Anyone who takes into account the hearty, characterful properties of the Mille should know a trusted dealer in order not to be disappointed when it comes to customer service. So that the final exam was successful in all respects and that enthusiasm is maintained even after the first visit to the workshop.

Readers’ opinions – Aprilia RSV mille
Parts under guarantee or goodwill: ignition coil, three clutches, control unit and exhaust system. The gear ratio has been reduced by one tooth at the front and one at the rear. Jurgen Meyer, Driburg With the 180 tire at the rear, the Mille is much more manageable than if it were ten kilograms lighter. Aprilia does not deal with clutch and transmission problems at all. Ewald Bittler, Esslingen Unfortunately, the class of the machine does not correspond to the importer service. The exchange of a defective kickstand is annoying and tedious, spare parts for the inspection are a long time coming. Thomas Kuzel, Grobkrotzenburg I am very satisfied with the Mille, it is used both on the way to work and for racing training. German Schneider, Esslingen

Motor slipping clutch: instead of synthetic oil Castrol RS 10 W 60 mineral Castol GPS; In the event of complaints, Aprilia will replace the old vacuum valve (white) with a new one (red) Silencer with EC type approval: Shark Competition carbon, around 510 euros, higher version around 560 euros, both models also in aluminum, around 50 euros cheaper; Shark Track Carbon, (double pipe damper) around 665 euros. Many RSV mille owners mount one of the numerous, much lighter racing dampers for the racetrack, for example from Aprilia, Akrapovic or Termignoni, but all other larger manufacturers now have something in the Services. However, this requires modifications to the airbox inlet from 38 to 100 millimeters and a different EPROM, i.e. measures that are beyond legality for normal road use. Secondary translation Original 17:42, with the original chain length (108 links) a maximum of 16:43 is possible, however, any change is illegal Chassis Race Tech fork springs plus SAE 5 oil, around 130 euros; Ohlins steering damper around 300 euros; Ohlins shock absorber around 935 euros; Brembo radial pump around 314 euros; Brembo: Racing 2 brake pads (two pairs around 107 euros; Brembo steel brake discs (two pieces) around 546 euros, Lucas also offers a complete brake set for a total of 462 euros, plus steel-flex brake lines for around 54 euros; even cheaper: steel brake discs from Hagen Motorsport for 342 euros Crash protectors from B & G from 120 euros Replacement paneling parts: Sebipoly, Ilmberger, GL and other GRP manufacturers; Complete Velcro panels with closed oil pan from 490 euros
Insider interview with Gottfried Ihle – Aprilia RSV mille
? Has your job as an Aprilia dealer become more exciting since the introduction of the RSV mille? You can say that, but also more stressful.? Are there any general spare parts problems at RSV mille, or is it due to special parts? The delivery rate is 90 percent. But that’s not enough? Of course not, but it has gotten a lot better since the beginning. Last year, however, there were special bottlenecks due to a system change in the plant. An example? The original handlebar stub on the right. ? Are there any retailer problems when it comes to quality? I don’t want to rule that out when I hear complaints from Mille drivers.? Strengths and weaknesses of the mille? Chassis, from 2001 the brakes, high reliability in everyday use, workmanship. On the other hand: strong power distribution, fuel and oil consumption, complications with homologation.? Is the performance spread due to a lack of quality control in the Rotax factory? Also, but it only appears marginally in the ABE version, more in sport mode with open airbox, modified chip and silencer.? What needs to be improved at Aprilia Italy? The communication between Noale and the branches and between dealers and the press, generally the sales deficiencies. Do you think the model policy is ideal? A hot naked bike would certainly have been better for dealers than the Futura.
