XT in enduro format. Testers criticized the average braking performance and the stiff chassis.

XT in a Supermoto dress with 17-inch wheels from Excel and sporty road tires – 120/70 at the front, 160/60 at the rear. Biggest point of criticism: the spongy fork.

With the original aluminum case set, which is available as an extra (new price almost 1000 euros), the Tenere gains significantly in value and also in expedition character.

The same heart beats in all three types, but a little too slowly. Especially when comparing with KTM, the XT 660 R and Z always have to cut back.

What do I need to pay attention to when purchasing?

Yamaha’s XT Tenere was once the means of transportation for globetrotters. The single with water cooling has been around since 2004, and again in the legendary Tenere look from 2008. Does that increase its used value?

Yamaha Tenere

Because singles are out. There are still enough motorcyclists who swear by well-shaken stew food: weight, manageable technology and, last but not least, the hearty pounding out of the final pot make many people take it with conviction. It should be even better if you can rely on a well-established model name for decades. As well as Yamaha with the Tenere.

Convincing performance in the tests

The first XT appeared as a 500 cc single-cylinder as early as 1976. Wanderlust, adventure and real Paris – Dakar competence exuded above all the Yamaha XT 600 Tenere, introduced in 1983, which proudly bears the name of the desert of all deserts in the southern Sahara. In 2004, Yamaha fundamentally modernized the Single – the air-cooled single cylinder of the XT series was replaced by a modern, water-cooled engine. There were initially two models to choose from: the Yamaha XT 660 R Tenere in the typical off-road dress with a large 21-inch front wheel and the XT 660 X Tenere as a supermoto with 17-inch road tires typical of this type.

Both types remain optically inconspicuous, although they always give a convincing performance in MOTORCYCLE tests and prove to be real fun-makers on gravel hikes, on the winding house route or even in everyday commuting.

Yamaha XT 660 Z Tenere from 2008

Real life only comes into the matter four years later, when the third member of the group appears. The Yamaha XT 660 Z Tenere again bears the illustrious name of yesteryear, not only looks like a real rally bike, but also impresses with plenty of off-road competence despite its slow engine. Nevertheless, only a few new people wanted to strike. But even this single is not used for long.

sightseeing

In the meantime, even for small everyday mules like the Yamaha XT Tenere, the principle applies: Make sure that the checkbook is completely maintained, because the Japanese manufacturers have also started to have various retrofitting measures or technical actions carried out as part of regular inspections. Used buyers should clarify via the authorized dealer whether any work is still due.

Tenere with sensitive steering head bearings

During the inspection, especially in the case of R and Z types, you should look for harder terrain marks and rust in hidden places. In the MOTORRAD long-term test, the Supermoto (XT 660 X) also showed strong rust on the attachments and the poor quality of workmanship. If the Yamaha XT Tenere is annoying during the test drive due to constant speed jolts, the control unit has probably not yet been replaced. All three types stand out due to the quickly wearing rubber dampers on the sprocket carriers, the Tenere has a sensitive steering head bearing.

Market situation

With almost 8,500 units sold since the model launch of the water-cooled engine generation, the “new” XT is still far from the numbers of its ancestors. The young Yamaha XT Tenere in particular is disappointed – the dealers agree that it was clearly too late to stand out against strong competitors such as the KTM 690 R..

Price negotiations with harder bandages

Those interested in used will still find a wide range of products and if demand is subdued, especially for the X and R types of the Yamaha Tenere, they can negotiate prices with somewhat harder bandages. The Z is – also because of its lower distribution – much more in demand. Many XT providers draw attention to themselves with an above-average maintenance status. If accessories are available, they are mostly travel accessories (luggage racks, suitcases) and off-road equipment (engine protection, crash bars) for the R or an accessory exhaust for the X.

Facelift

2004 Market launch of the Yamaha XT 660 R (Enduro) and XT 660 X (Supermoto), both with a water-cooled, 48 hp single-cylinder engine. Prices R / X: 5855/6610 euros.

2005 Both models with new colors. Enduro price rises to 6210 euros, Supermoto remains unchanged.

2006 Recall for the purpose of replacing a defective throttle valve sensor, both types with new colors and new graphics. Price reduction R / X: 5855/6355 euros.

2007 More extensive model updates: engine complies with G-Kat Euro 3 standard, Supermoto with new aluminum rear swing arm and modified lamp / tank cover. Enduro with new aluminum pillion pegs and a modified design of the pillion grab handles. New colors and new graphics for both types. Prices R / X: 6063/6576 euros.

2008 Market launch of the Yamaha XT 660 Z Tenere with the same engine but a new frame. New graphics for Enduro and Supermoto. Prices R / X / Z: 6050/6595/6995 euros.

2009 All types with new graphics. Prices R / X / Z: 6595/6995/7595 euros.

2011 The Yamaha Tenere is optionally available with ABS (7,995 euros), the enduro rises to 6695 euros.

7150/7750 (8195) euros.

2013 New prices R / X / Z (ABS): 6995 /
