At this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como, BMW is showing what a Bavarian sports tourer of the future could look like with the BMW Motorrad Concept 9cento study.

Great sports tourers have a long tradition at BMW. Models such as the R 1200 RS or the S 1000 XR occupy this position in the current range. Bayern offer the F 800 GT in a class below that. With the newly developed two-cylinder, which is already offered in the F 750 GS and F 850 ​​GS, a corresponding sports tourer can be built again. What this could look like is shown by the Concept 9cento (spoken: nove cento) study presented in Italy..

All-rounder for the middle class

BMW Motorrad chief designer Edgar Heinrich justifies the fact that the new small engine was chosen for the study by stating that it is not always based on the maxim nowadays “higher faster further” have to go.

Rather, the Concept 9cento strives for balance. It should combine emotion and sufficient performance with a thirst for adventure, agility and driving fun to make an ideal sports tourer. In other words, the Concept 9cento should be a modern all-rounder for the new middle class.

In order to be able to meet this requirement, the study has not only fictional but also numerous functional elements. These include, for example, small suitcases on the stubby tail and half-shell cladding with a large pane. There is also an upright sitting position behind a high tubular handlebar, as well as spring elements with long suspension travel.

Can do sports and tours

In terms of design, the Concept 9cento is based closely on the current S 1000 XR. The seat-rear combination is extremely reduced, however, there should still be space for the driver and a pillion passenger. The measly seat bun at the back can be expanded by clipping in the suitcase. These are secured in their carrier by a strong electromagnet.

The S 1000 XR was obviously the patron of the design.

The fairly free-standing 190 17-inch rear wheel has a distinctive fin on its cover. In the front of the Ohlins fork there is a 120/70 tire on a 17-inch rim. Additional features include an automatic gearshift and an exhaust pipe that opens out to the right under the engine.

The study is rounded off by a special effect paint as well as various milling elements made of aluminum and LED light elements. And so that the appearance at the Villa d’Este looks complete, the BMW motorcycle Concept 9cento developed two motorcycle jackets.
