BMW R18 48 hp A2 version
Giant engine for the little bill

It seems absurd at first, but BMW seems to want to offer the giant boxer R18 in an A2 version with 47.5 hp. Presumably from autumn, ex works and possibly at no extra charge.

Numbers game: if you want to drive 18-hundred cubic meters at the age of 18, you could take an R18 from BMW. Rumors of an A2 version of the giant boxer with 35 kW or 47.5 hp are growing. Available ex works and directly from autumn, so it can be read in French media.

1,800 cubic and 48 hp

The boxer of the R18 normally draws 91 hp from 1,800 cubic meters and balances 158 Nm on the cardan. The top values are the revs of a diesel engine: at 3,000 revs the maximum torque comes, only 1,750 revolutions per minute later the maximum power is available. So far so good. The look at the performance curves the BMW in MOTORRAD 09/21 shows: The engine delivers the A2-compliant 35 kW already at a good 2,400 tours, i.e. just above idling speed.

140 Nm at the beginning

Relaxing? No, at the same time the boxer is already pressing a good 140 Nm on the clutch. So there would be more than enough power. Anyone who remembers their first throttled 500er with pain: The R18 pushes more than that Triple the chronicler’s CX 500 at this time. The imagined performance data is only correct, however, if BMW goes the simple way of limiting the speed to throttling. Simply via software without any further changes to the twist grip or throttle valve positions. The idea of a free measure for BMW customers would be plausible, as it would ultimately be a click of the mouse in the workshop. The costs for the changes to the registration certificates would then come on top, which at a good 21,000 euros for a standard R18 would be a negligible amount.

365 kilos for beginners

To land back at the CX 500 and the early years of the writer: The BMW weighs a proud 365 kilograms with a full tank, 150 more than the old manure pump. And even then it was not a lightweight. That shouldn’t go unmentioned: Given the weight, the performance of the standing and falling bike is completely irrelevant.

Conclusion

Harley, too, had throttled its cruisers down to 27 hp many years ago. Still sufficient for surfing the big torque wave. These variants are no longer in the factory program. At BMW, an A2 variant for the R18 seems to be coming. Then 365 kilos, 140 Nm and 47.5 hp would hit 18-year-olds in case of doubt. Interesting combination. On the other hand, the R18 costs 20,950 euros. The number of eighteen-year-olds who can afford this should be limited. Just like the rest of the demand.
