Testing the Dainese Full Metal D1 leather gloves

Discovery

The Dainese brand does not forget its origins renowned for the mastery of style. And there’s no shortage of style in these gloves. As soon as they are taken in hand, the Full Metal D1 are impressive, evoking sport, speed and performance. More sober in their all-black color that we are testing, they are all the more elegant. Thus, the Kevlar fiber seams contrast and dress the various elements.

Seams are Kevlar thread

A single panel of cowhide makes up the base of the glove and the palm is made from very supple goat leather. Long, the asymmetrical cuff adjustable by a wide velcro is lined with microfibers. Numerous topstitching and reinforcements adorn the surfaces, in particular in the flexion zones of the first phalanges. A non-slip insert between thumb and forefinger and another in micro serrated plastic on the palm ensure a good grip on the handles. The right glove even sports two additional grip pads on the index and middle fingers for better throttle control. The whole is largely perforated in many places: side of fingers, thumbs and wrist yoke, but no air intake is present.

The non-slip inserts provide a good grip on the controls

Safety is a very visible and rewarding component of the Dainese Full Metal D1, especially on the back.

Starting with their titanium plates micro-screwed onto carbon elements, adorning the junctions of the phalanges and the pasterns…. Between the two, a gusset provides the necessary flexibility and the whole is internally lined with Kevlar Jersey fabrics. On the fingers, small carbon shields decorate the gloves in many places. A specific DCP yoke (distortion control) is combined with a total reinforcement of the little finger. Finally, the outside of the palm receives a polyurethane insert, like the top of the cuff. Finally, an adjustment strap, on the wrist, straps the hand in order to leave the gloves in position during a possible fall.

The closure is provided by two velcro on the cuff and on the wrist

Test

Italian habit, the Italian brand Dainese sizes small. Better to order a size larger. Even so, the first donning gives rise to doubts as the gloves turn out to be adjusted, especially in hot weather. This is the quality of the design, following your body as closely as possible to better protect it. A constant of the transalpine equipment manufacturer. So allow some time before they are done in your hand to then marry her.

The glove size small, it is better to aim for a size above

We then no longer feel the rigid areas induced by the protections. Thin and soft, the goat leather ensures a fine touch to the controls. On the track, the feeling of protection is excellent and the gloves are forgotten.

On the other hand, the Full Metal D1 are not the most airy in the segment. They are much more effective when the temperature is a bit low, even going so far as to make you endure the mid-seasons, even in the event of light rain. If they can satisfy road use, they are still quite typical and lack, in absolute terms, the comfort sought on long journeys..

Once the leather is done, you no longer feel the protections

Conclusion

Ostentatious, the Dainese Full Metal D1 live up to their aesthetics both in terms of manufacturing quality and protection. The typical ergonomics ensure comfort, sporty, but of the very first order once the gloves have been worn for several days. In view of the many reinforcements, the flexibility is remarkable. Count all the same a size larger.

Priced at 349.95 € in recommended price, less in real terms (around 279 €), their price is hardly outrageous in view of the overall quality.

Beautiful and technical, the Full Metal D1 are the ideal ally for the track

We will oppose them the excellent Vanucci Speed Profi IV, at 199.99 €, less richly equipped and more discreet, but just as efficient and more ventilated. Also, the Alpinestars GP Pro at € 219.95, quite close in design, just like the Ixon RS Pro HP, asking € 199.90.

Dainese delivers here high fashion gloves, as admirable as they are remarkably designed. Solid and comfortable, the Full Metal D1 will be the stylish partners of your most sustained track sessions.
