Solidly made, never overwhelmed

Solidly made, never overwhelmed, almost always well cared for – robust big bikes are a good investment. And then there is the Honda factor: Is the water-cooled Honda CB 1300 the premium big ship?

Fred Siemer

04/10/2014

Not everything that Honda introduces automatically belongs to the family, but with Honda CB 1300 there was never any doubt. Despite the water cooling, the CB 750 is still in it, the part breathes Bol d’Or, represents four-in-line at its best. Honda itself referred to these traditions with a very popular red and white paint job, on the one hand to remember the victorious long-distance racers and on the other hand to remember the Japanese national colors.

Strangely enough, the Honda CB 1300 did not find its way to Europe from 1998 to 2003, only its second edition, which had been converted to injection, was allowed to flood the old continent with its torque surge. Between 3000 rpm and the limiter there are never less than 100 Newton meters, which can get you going well over 260 kilos. When it doesn’t have to be maneuvered, the bolide quickly makes you forget its pounds, and even surprises you in the curve labyrinth with a handiness that is above class level.

Honda CB 1300 with long-distance travel talent

The high-speed stability of early models was criticized every now and then, with the introduction of the – initially – optional half-shell (CB 1300 S), Honda stepped up the pace again in 2005 and ensured peace and quiet thanks to improved initial tires. At the same time, ABS, which was initially also subject to a surcharge, modernized the effective brakes. In this regalia, the Honda CB 1300 won even more friends, because on the one hand it looks like the legendary CB 1100 R is cut from the face, and on the other hand it has greater long-distance travel talent. The big tank comforts her considerable high-speed thirst; if you let her roll on country roads, you get by with a good 5.5 liters. The driver is pleased with the high level of seating comfort, silky smooth running of the engine and the smooth-running gearbox, while the pillion passenger would like footpegs that are a bit lower. Nothing else, but despite the greatest satisfaction of its users, this big bike disappeared from the range in 2013.

sightseeing

Because the Honda CB 1300 already had a foreplay in Japan, it came on the local market in 2003 in a very mature form. There was only one recall that is still relevant today, and that only affected early 2003 models. Here, in the steering head area, an unsmoothed weld seam on the frame could chafe the wiring harness. It can be safely assumed that the seam on all affected motorcycles has been smoothed and then repainted. Otherwise, it is worth taking a look at the ignition coil holders, which in rare cases can become ailing. In the case of a built-in retrofit silencer, make sure that it has been installed without tension. Otherwise, the rear bend posture may have suffered. Even sworn Honda CB 1300 fans find it quite loud behind the half-shell fairing. It gets even louder, however, with windshields from the accessories, and the windshields for the naked CB that from the Honda range come off best.

Market situation

In principle, classic big bikes are among the sought-after, but not the really expensive used ones. The number of machines on offer has a price-dampening effect, as is the case with the Honda CB 1300. Around 3500 euros is not much for a lot of motorcycles, and early models start with over 50,000 kilometers. If you invest 500 euros more, you either get the half shell or less mileage, if you add almost 1000, you can hope for ABS. It is in top condition for less than 6,000 euros, while the Honda CB 1300 of the last few years of construction are as good as new and range between 8,000 and 9,000 euros.

Because of the very high silencer, only a few carry a case system – unfortunately it looks really stupid. Better fork springs and a power commander for early years of construction can increase prices, even good tuning costs extra.

Facelift

1998 The first Honda CB 1300, model code SC 40, appeared in Japan. Its carburettor-equipped engine, which was still decorated with indicated cooling fins (!), Was based on that of the X4, which was particularly successful in its home market and which found its way to us in a few copies via gray imports.

2003 the SC 54 then turned to the European markets with injection, catalytic converter and secondary air system and filled a gap that had emerged in 1998 after the optically and technically similar CB 1000 was discontinued. Price: 9990 euros.

2005 Half-clad S variant. In view of the performance offered, a windbreak makes sense, as does a well-functioning ABS adopted from the CBF 600 (600 euros surcharge). At the same time, the side covers are slightly slimmer, so the drivers don’t have to spread their legs and can get their feet on the ground better. From now on, new injection nozzles and modified software in the on-board computer help against the often criticized harsh response behavior of the four-cylinder engine and annoying constant speed jolts. Prices: 10,090 euros for the standard model, 11,290 euros for the Honda CB 1300 S ABS.

2009 In order to improve the exhaust gas values, some changes were made to the electronics, the maximum output dropped by two to 114 hp. In addition, a fork with 120 instead of 106 millimeters of spring travel has now been installed. Prices Honda CB 1300 / S: 12,000 / 12,490 euros.

2013 Last model year in Germany (since 2010 only Honda CB 1300 S). Price: 12,490 euros.
