The predecessor, the Kymco AK 550i, could be in Comparison test 2017 against the Yamaha TMAX DX push through. Now the top model of the Taiwanese scooter manufacturer is rolling out with Euro 5. The 550 cc twin-cylinder develops 51 hp at 7,500 rpm and 51.9 Nm at 5,750 rpm. With the Euro 4 vote, it was 53.7 hp and 55 Nm. Kymco specifies a top speed of 160 km / h.

Kymco AK 550 ETS with ride-by-wire

The acronym ETS stands for Electronic Throttle System on the new Kymco AK 550. So ride-by-wire is used on the throttle valves. It should enable more efficient engine management. The power is transmitted by a belt.

The chassis is made of aluminum and uses a hydraulic 41 mm telescopic fork with 120 mm travel at the front and a single-sided swing arm, also made of aluminum, with 48 mm travel at the rear. The Kymco AK 550 ETS rolls on 15-inch alloy wheels with tires measuring 120 / 70-15 at the front and 160 / 60-15 at the rear. Braking is done by Bosch’s two-channel ABS 9.1. The Brembo pliers bite into 270 mm double discs at the front, while the rear is decelerated by a 260 mm single disc.

Equipment designed for comfort

In terms of equipment, the Kymco AK 550 ETS is designed for comfort. As with its predecessor, the large, stepless bench is equipped with an adjustable back cushion for the driver. The height of the windshield can be adjusted in two positions, the handles are heated and the storage compartment under the seat opens electrically and is also equipped with an adjustable interior light. A full-face helmet fits easily in, for smaller utensils there are additional storage compartments at the front – two of them with a cover and one of them with a USB socket.

Full LED lights ensure visibility and visibility, the rear-view mirrors are not only foldable, but also protect the driver from glare from behind, while an LC display in the cockpit provides information. Of course, everything is keyless here, the ignition key does not have to be taken out of your pocket. The Noodoe navigation system is standard on board and can manage traffic information as well as calls and messages on request. The driving modes are either full power or the rain mode with reduced power. The Kymco AK 550 ETS can be placed on its side stand or on the main stand.

Accessories, colors, prices

There are numerous accessories for the large Kymco scooter that make it sportier or more touristy, depending on your needs. For example, there is a larger, slightly tinted GT weather protection screen, a sporty windscreen with a strong tint and differently sized top cases with backrests.

The Kymco AK 550 ETS can be driven with a class A motorcycle license. It is available in matt blue and matt black at a price of EUR 10,499 plus delivery costs.

Conclusion

Driving dynamics, good brakes, low consumption and a comparably low price for a sporty large scooter – these attributes already distinguished the predecessor and will certainly also apply to the Kymco AK 550 ETS in the 2021 model year.
