Market reports - The motorcycle market still two-speed - The motorcycle market still two-speed

2012 starts well for the French motorcycle market with an increase of + 1.9%, but the 2011 trend persists: sales of large displacement motorcycles and scooters increased by + 10% while the 125 cc fell by -11.5 %. First market report.

The motorcycle market still at two speeds

Like last year (read our), January 2012 was a positive month for the French motorcycle market. 9,717 motorcycles and scooters of 125 cc and more were registered, a little more than in January 2011: 182 additional units to be exact, an increase of + 1.9%. Positive, therefore, CQFD.

However, the "positive attitude" is not everywhere … Thus, all the 125 cc sees its registrations plummet by -11.5% compared to last year! The fact that January 2011 had been very good for the 125 (+ 14.9%) and that the month of January 2012 had one less working day (-4.76% of activity) will not really console the dealers….

Especially not those of the brands Honda (-16%), Peugeot (-47%), MBK (-12%) and Daelim (-18%), but also of "other" manufacturers (-15%) who are the most affected in January 2012. Conversely, Piaggio (+ 16%), Sym (+ 24%) and KTM (+ 54%!) are trying to raise the average.

As for large cubes, the trend is much better: the 593 additional registrations compared to January 2011 allow the entire sector to post an encouraging + 10%. Enough to warm up the atmosphere at the very moment when the temperatures are getting damn cold !

This time, it is Yamaha (-3%), Suzuki (-4%), Triumph (-36%) and KTM (-11%) which are slowing the market while BMW (+ 39%), Harley-Davidson (+ 20%), Ducati (+ 90%!) And Gas Gas (+ 26%) continue to accelerate it.
