With this splendid Bobber-inspired R18 concept, BMW gives a new insight into the possible variations around its new 1800 cc flat-twin air-oil cooled. Explanations and video.

This visibly functional prototype (see video below) is the first officially built by BMW around its new big 1.8L Boxer, which we had only seen on Japanese (Custom Works Zon) and then American ( Revival Cycles).

Remember that this imposing air-oil-cooled engine receives a tumbled timing and a huge front housing, Boxer style from the 60s. Characteristics emerging from the drawers of BMW, which conversely inaugurates a sophisticated variable valve timing on its very technological R1250 range.

This contrast is assumed by a new engine responsible for propelling a category of motorcycles in which the German brand has long been interested in breaking into the American market: customs. This "very big twin", coincidentally close in displacement to the Harley and Indian, is ideal for exercise: both classy and classic … and undoubtedly expressive from low revs !

The final transmission by cardan shaft is also part of the house habits, while offering the advantages of the belt to which "bikers" are accustomed (cleanliness, lack of maintenance and lifespan). The low line and the refined rear part – with single-seater saddle – actually refer to this type of motorcycles in general … and to the magnificent in particular! MNC particularly appreciates the elegant water drop tank, the cowling on the inverted fork and the spoke rims in 21 and 18 inches.

The tiny offset rear light near the disc also produces its small effect, as does the chrome treatment of the axially mounted calipers. The absence of visible cables and hoses is a feast for the eyes, while the small shock absorber hidden under the saddle maintains the illusion of a tubular "hardtail" frame. Triumph uses the same trick on its !

Will BMW unveil a motorcycle close to this Concept 18 at the motorcycle shows this fall 2019? The idea is not unreasonable, insofar as the manufacturer regularly uses this competition to introduce new products in the form of prototypes (Nine T, K1600 Bagger, future F850 RS …).

The Munich coat of arms could however create a surprise with a more "Cruiser" version built around its new Boxer 1800, as the stolen photos of a developing machine suggest … To be continued on MNC: stay tuned !
