R & amp; D - BMW Dynamic Damping Control: the suspensions of the future? - Used BMW

Let it be said: the motorcycle manufacturer currently at the forefront of progress and innovation is not Japanese but German! The proof with the new real-time managed damping control (DDC) system that BMW Motorrad is about to launch.

The first manufacturer to install ABS on a motorcycle in 1988, BMW Motorrad combines innovation and sophistication in the development of its two-wheelers. Contrary to popular belief and its old "old-fashioned" image, Behème is indeed often at the cutting edge of progress in terms of piloting assistance..

To be convinced, just look at the BMW offer: ABS, anti-slip (ASC or DTC) or electronic suspension adjustment (ESA) are available as options on almost all models. motorcycles, while the technological advance of the S1000RR stripper still prevents many Japanese engineers from sleeping…

BMW Motorrad engineers benefit from the precious technological transfers resulting from the brand’s automotive know-how. Technologically more advanced in terms of electronic assistance, the automobile in general and BMW cars in particular often introduce solutions that are then found on certain motorcycles.

Convinced of the merits of this approach – unlike some bikers who look down on the development of piloting aids on motorcycles -, BMW has just unveiled a semi-active damping management system that will be proposed in the near future: the Dynamic Damping Control (dynamic damping control).

Recently introduced in the automobile, in particular on the 3 and 5 Series, this process allows the suspensions to adapt automatically to the state of the road, but also to the different driving phases: the damping laws thus evolve in real time according to whether the motorcycle accelerates, brakes or tilts !

As with theElectronic Suspension Adjustment, three modes offering different sensitivities will be offered to the pilot: Comfort, Normal and Sport. But unlike the ESA, the DDC then automatically regulates the calibration of the suspensions within the range predefined by the initial choice..

For example, the system would be able to increase the stiffness of the springs during braking or acceleration to improve stability, or to "relax" them to absorb a bump more comfortably. Magic, no ?

Interconnected with the DTC traction control sensors and those of the ABS, the device Dynamic Damping Control act, "in a few thousandths of a second"according to BMW, on the hydraulics of the springs. By means of an electronically controlled proportional valve, the system modulates the section at the level of the passages of the oil flows, which directly influences the speed and firmness of the reactions in compression and relaxation.

The dynamic control of DDC damping "will soon make its debut on BMW Motorrad series models", warns the manufacturer.
