Road rallies - 8th Corsica rally: Velardi Day! - The race in the race

Christophe Velardi, imperial at home on the handlebars of his Ducati 1200 Multistrada, left no chance for the mainlanders and won the Corsican event of the 2014 French rally championship. The championship is in full swing… Report.

The race in the race

Julien Toniutti had announced it to MNC before the start: "here there are two races, that of the islanders and that of the championship of France"… But when an islander is also a contender for the championship, things get complicated !

Despite the landing of the top continental pilots on the Isle of Beauty, the strong men of this magnificent event will remain … the Corsicans! In particular with the duel in which Christophe Velardi (Ducati 1200 Multistrada) and his compatriot Luc Deiana (Honda 450 CRF HM) were engaged. But the competition for the title was also played in pole position of the provisional in the championship and the battle was hot between the Aprilia 1000 Tuono of Laurent Filleton and the Yamaha MT09 Team 2B / Deletang of the leader of the championship, Julien Toniutti..

This year’s route is unique, with roads still as picturesque with magical views. As announced last week, this year’s specials are less sinuous and much faster than those of the previous Corsican editions, which does not necessarily put "Supermotard" type single cylinders to their advantage….

Significant thing: the weather! Finally, appreciable for lovers of summer heat … The omnipresent sun will cause high temperatures throughout the event, especially on Saturday. It’s a change from the torrential rain last year !

Menu of the day

On the program, two slightly different loops, to be done twice each for the day stage: one of about 85 km and the other of about 77. The only difference between the two passages is a foray into the village. from Bastelicaccia and on the small road to reach Eccica Suarella, then Cauro for the "big" loop and a few kilometers of N190 which directly join Cauro avoiding Bastelicaccia, and finally Eccica Suarella for the "small".

Each loop passing through the two stages – Urbalacone and Cognocoli-Monticchi -, eight stages are therefore planned for the daytime stage..

For the night stage, only one passage on each loop is planned, ie four stages. The program is therefore full for this eighth edition of the Corsican rally with twelve specials planned..

Among the contenders for victory in this third round of the French championship, despite the style of the specials rather suited to fast motorcycles, we expect high aerobatics from the two Corsican accomplices Luc Deiana on his Honda 450 CRM and Yohann Vigilenti on Husaberg 570 FS, which had been impressive in the first rally of the 2014 championship, the .

But Yohann is not leaving under ideal conditions: "since my engine broke at the Garrigues rally, I was only able to recover my bike yesterday at 2 p.m., so I couldn’t do a recce", explains the island pilot to MNC…
