The price for the boxer tourer BMW R 1200 RT in full regalia then climbs to over 20,000 euros, with ABS and suitcases as standard. A lot of wood for an admittedly masterfully assembled motorcycle composition made of a lot of (light) metal and high-quality plastics. However, when the first shine has faded, bargain-hunting second-hand buyers are waiting for their shot.

However, many owners are often so enthusiastic about the formidable chassis and the reliable and sufficiently powerful 110 hp boxer engine that they only want to give their BMW R 1200 RT back after many trips and sometimes with more than 100,000 kilometers. This testifies to the longevity and touristic qualities of this very convincing, surprisingly handy 1200 model in terms of driving dynamics compared to its class. And now also with a new audio system as a further luxury, which of course drives the price up further, so that normal Otto buyers touch their heads. However: high new price, high price drop after first ownership. So if you are looking for a used car that is as good as new, you don’t want to spend every cent and fish for one of the best tourers on the market, the BMW R 1200 RT will do well.

The electronic chassis ESA is very sales-promoting, but please make sure that everything works (test drive, at least start the engine and check whether something moves at the push of a button). Replacing a defective ESA shock absorber on the BMW R 1200 RT costs up to 2000 euros.

Damage to the rear wheel axle can be just as expensive: simple bearing replacement from around 400 euros, complete replacement of the unit for 1500 euros. So better to check whether the bearings are running rough or even have play! And study the service booklet carefully, every 20,000 kilometers there is a major inspection (a good 600 euros), the simple annual service (fluid change, electronic diagnostics) costs around 350 euros. Anyone who (has) waived this for reasons of economy risks expensive follow-up costs, for example if the ABS goes nuts. The rear brake pads wear out twice as quickly as the front ones – important: keep an eye on the wear limit, otherwise the brake disc is at risk.

The availability on the market is high. However, so is the price level for fairly new machines.

The rule: used BMW R 1200 RT are available from dealers, mostly authorized dealers. Private offers are often well-traveled motorhomes with mileage significantly in excess of 50,000 kilometers. The range on offer at a low price level of less than 8500 euros is comparatively clear. In the absence of competition, it is hardly surprising that the prices are sometimes very excessive. But even those who are willing to invest more than 10,000 euros must diligently search for real value treasures. If something is advertised, you should grab it quickly, because good machines with a mileage of less than 30,000 kilometers are specifically sought.

The prices of the BMW R 1200 RT actually only go down when equipment gaps, such as a missing tour or safety package, significantly reduce the attractiveness of the offer. On the other hand, the density of offers in the 15,000 plus price class is noticeably high – there are numerous, two-year-old new bikes and demonstrators with mileages of less than 10,000 kilometers, including a wide range of equipment, which give interested parties plenty of room to negotiate.
