The windbreak behind the redesigned cladding and windshield is also designed for high speeds – so what more could you want? One answer could be: even more steam and speed. And this is exactly where the reason for the shadowy existence of the ZZ-R and from 2003 in ZZR 1200 renamed Kawa. The in-house ZX-12R and Suzuki’s Hayabusa cracked the magical 300 km / h limit almost at the same time, so when the ZZR debuted, full-throttle freaks were only slightly attached to the fast, but not super-fast 1200. The sports touring faction, on the other hand, missed ABS, G-Kat and injection and looked in the direction of ever faster bikes from Bavaria. Nowadays, if you can live without high-end qualities, like to be on the road long and fast, even go on vacation with a set of suitcases, the rock-solid ZZR is a hot second-hand tip, although from now on it will no longer be a secret.

If the dipstick shows only a minimum after an extensive test drive (pay attention to mechanical noises!), This is a bad sign. Presumably the previous owner or the previous owner took care of the oil supply and change only sloppily. With complete documentation and good maintenance, on the other hand, those interested in the ZZR need to worry less. The engine is good for mileage beyond 50,000 kilometers, even if there were isolated problems with the camshafts. Kawasaki did not issue a recall, but at the time damage was quickly repaired under warranty. Suitcase and softbag luggage systems, a high touring screen, heated grips or automatic chain lubrication are a plus. In order to trim the sports tourer for long distances, it was often equipped with a superbike handlebar or higher stubs. In this case, make sure that the entries are correct!

Market situation

As expected, the range of used ZZR 1200s is small with an inventory of less than 2000 pieces. At the same time, the demand for the motorcycle is also rather low. This makes the Kawasaki interesting for cool, calculating buyers. While popular bikes such as the Honda CBR 1100 XX or BMW K 1200 S are still comparatively expensive and can only be gotten really cheaply with high mileages over 50,000 kilometers, ZZR 1200s that are well-maintained can be found for less than 5,000 euros. In top condition and with less than 30,000 kilometers on the clock. Models with 98 hp are also popular; retrofitting costs around 300 euros. Used ZZR 1200s are noticeably common at Kawa dealers. Dealers report that the previous owners often traded in their machine when buying a ZZR 1400. Private sellers do not usually offer cheaper.

Facelift

2002 The ZZ-R 1200 is offered as type ZX1200-C1H in Germany at a price of 11,995 euros. Colors: blue, silver, black. Power variant: 98 hp.

2003 Change of the model name: no longer ZZ-R 1200 but ZZR 1200. The new type ZX1200-C2H has an automatic daylight function, modified brake discs (eight instead of six millimeters thick and hole pattern with 36 instead of 72 holes). The machine complies with Euro 2 emissions standard. Price and color variants unchanged.

2004 Reduced jackpot model: 10,499 euros.

2005 Construction freeze and sale of the ZZR 1200 (list price: 11,995 euros), which will be replaced in the following year by the completely redesigned ZZR 1400 model.
