The VTR 1000 consequently met the difficult fate of being measured by two standards: too blunt as a weapon in combat within the market segment of high-performance V2 sports machines dominated by Ducati. And too sharp for sport touring drivers who undoubtedly preferred a more sensible, because it is more economical and versatile VFR. The Firestorm was a real hit despite a major facelift in 2001 (including greater range thanks to a larger tank and modified carb-

with low mileage between 15,000 and 20,000 kilometers for its age. In addition, some VTRs from 1997/1998 are available for as little as 3000 euros. These then usually have over 30,000 kilometers under their belt and are very attractive mainly because of the low price.

She came and won. World champion title 2000 with Colin Edwards as jockey. Back then, the Honda VTR 1000 SP-1 fulfilled its mission: to wrest the Superbike crown from Ducati. At the time, sports fans could purchase the basic model of the Superbike World Championship winning machine for 26,460 marks. A proud price, but compared to a sinfully expensive Ducati 996 SPS starting in the same league (price 2000: 44,340 marks) almost a bargain. The-

However, the price was not the main reason why the street-legal SP-1, weighing 221 kilograms with a full tank, did not become the winner. The rather disappointing results after the first comparison tests contributed more to this: too little radical, too tame for fast lap times. The attested country road qualities, based on a comfortable chassis and a very cultivated two-cylinder, fell into oblivion.
The SP-2, which was slimmed down by four kilograms, replaced the SP-1 in 2002 and was given a stiffer, yet lighter chassis and three horsepower more power for the extreme loads on the slopes.
