A motorcycle is worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. According to this old used trade wisdom, the TDM seller will probably have to adjust his asking price downwards.

Temperatures just above freezing point, drizzle and economic downturn ?? not exactly the ideal conditions to sell a motorcycle. As a provider, you have to make concessions. For example, make appointments with interested parties who seem a bit windy. Why does this person photograph all possible details of the TDM 850? He’s not going to do the preparatory work for a professional gang of thieves?
You can almost hear the stone falling from your heart when the MOTORRAD test surveyor finally opens his camouflage and the salesman his initial one
Admits fears. And to finally relax, he also receives a free quality assessment on top of that: The TDM is in perfect condition. The paintwork has minimal scratches and the bike is clean in even the most hidden nooks and crannies ?? no wonder, with only 500 kilometers driven in the last two years. As with many other motorcyclists, a dismal lack of opportunity is the reason for the sale.
It should be fine with the buyer: the
The engine is dry all around, starts well and runs perfectly. The installed Remus exhaust system sounds
more robust than the subdued sound
of the original, but, as the TDM exhaust comparison test in MOTORRAD 14/1996 showed, it costs seven hp of peak performance. The condition of the chain set and tires is decent, the brake discs are scratch-free. The stanchions are bone dry, after all, the fork seals have already been replaced? an eternal source of annoyance at TDM.
Around 37,000 kilometers are a low mileage for a motorcycle built in 1991, especially for the TDM, which is known to be durable and robust. The provider is only the second owner, and his Yamaha regularly saw the workshop during the inspections. Nevertheless: The asking price of 2890 euros is over
a few hundred euros too high. The topcase, brake disc lock and tarpaulin add-ons don’t really change that. The seller now sees it similarly: A TDM-850 owner who is willing to negotiate within certain limits calls 0163/5060830. The terms of sale are simply not ideal at the moment.

Model overview – Yamaha TDM 850

Model history presented in 1991 TDM 850 offered a daring mix of styles: the high and upright seating position as well as the engine protection could have come from an enduro, which, apart from its high fuel consumption, proved its low-vibration and high-torque engine, real touring qualities, and the stable chassis with its good brakes was reminiscent of that a sports motorcycle. The first major cut was made in 1996: From then on, the unrelated engine protection was omitted and, thanks to the use of the crankshaft of the TRX 850 engine with its 270 degree crank pin offset, the good vibration behavior of the previous model was also eliminated. On the other hand, the buyers retained the rough transmission and the violent load change reactions. Yamaha drove both of the TDM out with the second major facelift in 1999 ?? Due to the significantly increased driving pleasure, the increase in output to 82 hp was of secondary importance. The current higher-displacement TDM 900 (from 2002) has developed even further in the direction of sports tourers and has hardly anything to do with the original model, both in terms of appearance and character: that Design and brakes even more aggressive, the 86 hp engine even more powerful, the cockpit even more modern.Market situation Although the TDM 850 never dominated the streets, the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) still has a stock of 12,800 units. Of these, around 5200 copies are based on the 3VD type, 4000 on the 4TX type with 80 HP and 3600 on the same type with 82 HP. The older models in particular have proven to be comparatively stable in value: a ten-year-old TDM is still listed at 2750 euros in the Schwacke list? with a mileage of around 83,000 kilometers. The starting price for the greatly improved model from 1999 is 5,000 euros, a TDM 900 (from 2002) is hardly available for less than 7,500 euros the TDM consequently with flying colors. Since the exhaust noise of the two-cylinder is generally very subdued, the installation of a retrofit exhaust system is one of the owners’ most popular conversions. As an exhaust test in MOTORRAD 14/1996 showed, however, no retrofit system achieves the top performance and homogeneous performance of the original. It is therefore important that the original system is handed over with the sale. Rough switching noises were standard up to model year 1999 and are therefore no cause for concern during the test drive. On the other hand, very strong load change reactions lead to the fear of worn shock absorbers in the rear wheel. At higher mileages (from 50,000 kilometers) the central spring strut can lose its damping. After bumps in the road, the motorcycle rebounds heavily in pillion mode, and a new shock absorber then brings back driving stability. Optimization Most of the possibilities for improvement are still available on the original type of the TDM 850, the 3VD. The high fuel consumption of this model can be reduced significantly (up to over a liter per 100 kilometers) by hanging the nozzle needles of the throttle valve in the lowest position, so the needles must protrude as far as possible from the valve. To do this, however, a lot has to be unscrewed first, namely the side parts and the upper part of the cladding, tank and air filter. And be careful: Strictly speaking, this intervention invalidates the operating license. The button of the hard-to-reach choke can be moved to the handlebars ?? the train is long enough for this, and the slightly modified part of an XTZ 750 can serve as a holder. Often the upper part of the cladding is booming, here it usually helps to glue the struts of the cladding holder with thin foam rubber strips. The fork seals last much longer if you don’t have to constantly mess with dirty stanchions ?? Bellows (for example from Gotz, phone 07476/933150, 21 euros) do not look very nice, but provide lasting protection. Harder springs prevent the telescopic fork from immersing deeply (for example from Wirth, phone 04189/811020, around 80 euros). Chain maintenance is either made easier by retrofitting a main stand (for example from JF Motorsport, phone 06002/910391, 109 euros) or the frequency of maintenance is reduced by installing the Scottoiler permanent lubrication system (available for example from Louis, phone 040/73419360, The Bridgestone BT 54, Metzeler ME Z2 and Metzeler ME Z4 tires enjoy a particularly good reputation.
