The new motorcycle registrations for women paint a completely different picture than the overall statistics for the first half of 2019. Most of the bikes that are most popular with women are slim, petite and under 1000 cc.

Yamaha MT-07 – the eternal second? In the overall statistics it has been at least since its market launch in 2014. It was already in first place among women motorcyclists – but that was the last time in 2017 when it topped the ranking just ahead of the Kawasaki Z 650. Since 2018, however, the Kawa has not given up the scepter and leads the registration statistics for women: 536 new registrations of the Z 650 were made to private female individuals in the first half of 2019. In the overall statistics for the first half of the year, there are a total of 1,820 units on the account of the Z 650, which is enough for her in fourth place in the overall ranking.

The Honda Rebel has been making itself comfortable in third place on the podium since 2018, followed by the BMW R 1250 GS, which is overpowering in the overall statistics. Together with the Harley-Davidson Street Bob, it is also the only model with a displacement of over 1000 cc.

Comparison of admissions for women and overall statistics

Only 13 models of the 20 most popular motorcycles by women come from the top 20 of the overall ranking. The Yamaha MT-03 makes up most of the places in comparison to the overall statistics: It jumps from 99th place in the overall registrations to 19th place in the women’s top 20. From 71st place in the overall ranking comes the Honda NC 750 S, which is also next to the MT-03 in 19th place among women.

The Ducati Scrambler does not currently have a top 20 place in the overall statistics (40th place), but is 18th in the women’s registrations in the first half of the year. The same is true for the Honda CB 650 R: 36th place in the overall list , 14th place for women.

Overall, naked bikes are clearly ahead among women – there are twelve in number. The other motorcycles are divided as follows: three cruisers / choppers (Honda Rebel, Harley Street Bob, Kawa Vulcan S), two athletes (Kawasaki Ninja 650, Honda CBR 500 R), two enduros (BMW R 1250 GS, F 750 GS ) and the Ducati Scrambler.

Comparison of the 1st half of 2019 to the 2018 statistics

At the end of 2018, the top 20 of the most popular motorcycles for women still featured the BMW G 310 R, Triumph Street Triple, Harley-Davidson Forty-Eight and KTM 690 Duke. The following four models make room for the 2019 half-year results: BMW F 750 GS, Harley-Davidson Street Bob, Ducati Scrambler and Honda NC 750 S are new in the top 20 women in the middle of the year.

The motorcycle market from a women’s perspective

In the first half of 2019, almost ten percent of all motorcycles run on women, although the market share has been constant for years and is slightly increasing. Expressed in absolute numbers, this means: 7,127 motorcycles were newly registered for women from January to June 2019, 51,900 for men, and the remaining 15,604 are commercial registrations.

The market share of women is higher for light motorcycles, since it is a good 18 percent of the total of 10,776 light motorcycles that are registered for women. But that’s not a surprise either, it has been the familiar image for years.

The entire two-wheeler market, i.e. motorcycles, light motorcycles, large and small scooters as well as three- and four-wheeled vehicles, which are included in the two-wheeler statistics, totaled 106,842 newly registered vehicles in the first half of 2019. Of these, 11,707 (11.1 percent) are registered for women, 75,114 for men (71.4 percent) while 18,383 (17.5 percent) are new commercial registrations.

Conclusion

Small, petite, handy, in the trendy naked bike format – that’s how it works for women too. And with around ten percent market share, women are still a relevant factor in Germany, which is why manufacturers do well not to forget about women when planning their products. Honda and Kawasaki in particular score points with female motorcyclists with their offer. Honda is represented with five models, Kawasaki with four, with Kawa leading in terms of numbers: 1,036 units are for the Greens, 865 for Honda.
