And size does matter
In the approval year 2020, the most popular motorcycles among women will come from the middle class. Most of them are in the displacement classes between 500 and 900 cm³.

The motorcycle market in Germany really picked up again in 2020: bikes with a displacement of more than 125 cm³ increased by 17.2 percent. The market share of motorcycles registered for female owners increased slightly to 10.6 percent (2019 it was 10.4%; 2018 it was 10.1%). However, that does not mean that the market share of male owners has decreased as a result. No, it is also steadily increasing in small steps. What is decreasing are the new commercial registrations.
In 2020 there were more new motorcycle registrations for women than in previous years – more precisely: 18.9 percent. In the light motorbike segment, there was even 78.4 percent more than last year (+ 81.3% for men). And that’s not the end of the story: 135.3 percent more light scooters were newly registered for women in 2020 compared to the previous year (+ 101.4% for men). In the case of scooters over 125 cm³, the women also increased compared to the previous year: 4.1 percent are there (+ 3.5% for men).
Most popular motorcycles among women
In the overall statistics for 2020, the Kawasaki Z 650 is in fourth place, but among women motorcycle riders – as in previous years – it easily makes it to the top of the podium. Behind them is the Yamaha MT-07, which has also become a tradition. And the Honda CMX 500 Rebel remains the constant in third place in the registration year 2020.

The Honda CMX 500 Rebel is particularly popular with women because of its low seat height (690 mm).
After that, there is some movement in the ranks compared to last year: The Suzuki SV 650 moves past the Z 900 to 4th place, the Kawa descends to P5. The KTM 390 Duke has worked its way up place by place in the last few years and will be in 6th place in 2020.This is the first time that it has overtaken the BMW R 1250 GS, which is 7th for women in the new registration year 2020. Eighth place went to the KTM 790 Duke, ninth place was the first female athlete, the Kawasaki Ninja 650, while the Honda CB 500 F made the top 10.
Displacement classes between 500 and 900 cm³
Together with the two Harleys Sportster Forty-Eight and Street Bob, the BMW R 1250 GS forms the small group of motorcycles over 1,000 cc. Three other candidates stand out with less than 500 cc: KTM 390, Yamaha MT-03 and Kawasaki Z 400. In between there are a total of 24 motorcycles in the top 30, all of which have between 500 and 900 cc.
15 of the 30 bestsellers fall under the category of naked bikes, followed by the somewhat taller travel enduros / supermotos / all-rounders with seven representatives, the cruisers with five models and three Japanese athletes.

Conclusion
At this point, the author dares to boldly state: There is no substitute for displacement. Except … through a practical seat height and handiness for the average woman and smaller women. And: the size counts. And the middle one. At least when it comes to which bikes women motorcyclists in Germany choose. Medium displacement class, medium power, medium price segment.
