Analysis of the SBK World Cup at Silverstone

The hero of this Mad Sunday is undoubtedly Cal Crutchlow. The Yamaha rider even started on Saturday by winning his fifth Superpole, relegating his closest opponent to nearly 7 tenths and the rest of the field to one second. !

Then the reigning Supersport world champion took advantage of "his" two races on Sunday to claim his first victory and his first double in the World Superbike. Not content with being the best against the clock, Cal could also claim maximum technical and artistic notes: the R1 has rarely been heckled in this way … !

The one we are starting to nickname "King Cal" – in reference to King Carl Fogarty – is gradually emerging from the invading shadow of Ben Spies, titled in his first season in WSBK on the same bike last year.

With his 50 points, the No. 35 Yamaha jumped from 10th to 5th place in the provisional standings, ahead of big names in the discipline such as Corser, Fabrizio, Haga or Toseland! If the first three pilots are far away, Carlos Checa, 4th with 204 points (against 188 for Crutchlow) must be wary of this flamboyant pilot !

The only British event on the calendar – against three in 2007 – Silverstone largely smiled on British drivers in general: the two podiums were occupied by Englishmen … and an Irishman with Jonathan Rea.

Dropped out in qualifying by the incredible Cal, Johnny defended himself like a lion during the two races: relentlessly tracked by the No.35 Yamaha, his No.65 Honda was visibly less comfortable on the particularly bumpy track of Silverstone. But what does it matter: with a valiant heart…

On the podium in the 1st round, Leon Haslam had to fight hard against James Toseland to take 4th place in the second round. Naturally, Royal Air Force rider Suzuki Alstare was hoping to do much better in order to come back further to championship leader Max Biaggi. But the GSX-R apparently couldn’t do better.

The results of his teammate are clear: Sylvain Guintoli could not do better than 12th and 7th. Our national rider had an extremely difficult first round, the fault, according to him, of the too versatile Pirelli tires..

Fortunately for Pirelli, the other drivers had no complaints about their tires. At the manufacturer, we have to breathe: after the strong reactions of the majority of the drivers at the end of the Brno event, Pirelli had chosen to withdraw its very last gums from the competition..

The fourth driver to be on the podium yesterday, Leon Camier was also very impressive. On a track that he masters perfectly, the 2009 English Superbike champion even allowed himself to tax his teammate Biaggi during the second round. !

Unlike Ferrari in Formula 1, Aprilia hasn’t – yet? – given instructions to its pilots. In this case, if Camier edged Biaggi in the second round, he mainly pushed Haslam off the podium, which is a good thing for Aprilia and Max….

But Max was far from being "Mad" this Sunday: off the track in every race, the Italian knew perfectly well that taking over the podiums in Great Britain was impossible. The Roman Emperor therefore let the locals of the stage explain themselves, finishing "first" foreigner in the second round and "second" in the first..

In the first round, Michel Fabrizio was the best foreigner on the handlebars of his factory Ducati. The loot remains very meager for the official Xerox team: Michel could not finish the second round and Haga finished 14th then 13th…

The 1198s in general did not spark any sparks: even Englishman Shane Byrne did not enter a top 5 yet almost stamped "British only". Carlos Checa remains the best representative of the brand with 204 points but as we have seen, his place is still far from being acquired….

Will the Ducatis do better at the next meeting on September 5 at the Nurburgring? In Germany, the public will certainly encourage more the S1000RR as well as Max Neukirchner, the only German driver registered in the WSBK! To be continued: stay connected !
