Our Erlkonig photographer caught the new Yamaha XT 700 Tenere on a test drive. We expect to see them ready for series production at INTERMOT 2016.

In the early summer of 2015, Erlkonigbilder confirmed the rumors about one Yamaha Tracer 700. The production-ready machine was not presented at EICMA 2015, but on April 20, Yamaha announced the market launch of the touring bike based on the MT-07 for July 2016. Yamaha no longer seems to be interested in the classic release cycle: The small Tracer was not presented at EICMA 2015, but will be on the market in July 2016. The MT-10 was exhibited at EICMA 2015, but will only be coming this summer. And the Yamaha XT 700 Tenere? Could be presented as a near-series prototype or even as a series bike at INTERMOT 2016 and / or EICMA 2016 and – sporty, sporty – roll out to dealers in the second half of 2017.

Sporty, sporty, because: A prototype of the Yamaha XT 700 Tenere is currently rolling around in Italy for test purposes. The only thing that looks fully developed on it so far is the two-cylinder from the MT-07. All other parts still look very much like homemade, temporarily glued and poorly covered. And since the Yamaha XT 700 Tenere will not have much in common with the MT-07 and the Tracer 700 apart from the engine, there is still a long way to go for the development team. A presentation at EICMA 2017 and the market launch in early 2018 is therefore also conceivable. But that would be the classic cycle again, which Yamaha doesn’t find so good at the moment.

The Erlkonig pictures show an adventure bike with a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel – ideal for off-road terrain. New fork, swing arm, fairing and Brembo brakes also set the Yamaha XT 700 Tenere apart from the MT-07 – also in the proverbial sense, because the seat height is likely to be much higher on the Offroad 700. The Erlkonig pictures also give hope for a larger tank for the Tenere: the MT-07 only has 14 liters, the Tracer 700 holds 17 liters, and the XT 660 Z Tenere 23 liters, which is suitable for long distances. ABS will certainly have them on board and of course meet all requirements for Euro 4.

However, the MT-07 two-cylinder is the only thing that looks fully developed on the Yamaha XT 700 Tenere so far. All other parts look like homemade, temporarily glued and poorly covered. And since the Yamaha XT 700 Tenere will not have much in common with the MT-07 and the Tracer 700 other than the engine, there is still a long way to go for the development team. A presentation at EICMA 2017 and the market launch in early 2018 is therefore also conceivable. But that would be the classic cycle again, which Yamaha doesn’t find so good at the moment.

Pricing Yamaha XT 700 Tenere

In the 2016 model year, the Yamaha MT-07 6395 euros, the XT 660 Z Tenere with ABS 8495 euros. We suspect that the price for the Yamaha XT 700 Tenere will range between 8500 and 9000 euros. With its approximately 690 cm³ in-line two-cylinder, it will probably replace the single-cylinder Yamaha XT 660 Tenere.
