O’tap is! Who would have thought ten years ago that next to the Oktoberfest, of all things, a super sports car would prove to be a Bavarian export hit? BMW paralyzed like a bang with the BMW presented at the end of 2009 S 1000 RR the superbike competition, which until now had to come from Japan or Italy.
From 2015 with a new look
The tremendous performance of the BMW S 1000 RR (202 hp on the MOTORRAD test bench) is of course one reason, but the assistance systems, which are unusual in this type of motorcycle, were even more interesting: four-stage traction control and an ABS (initially somewhat roughly regulating).
The BMW S 1000 RR made its debut in 2009.
Of course, other manufacturers have long since followed suit, but the Munich-based company remained ambitious: in 2012 a first update with more pressure in the middle, more even power delivery and better handling, followed in 2015 by a revised look, more power and a number of comfort gimmicks. The used BMW S 1000 RR can usually be found first or second hand, in good condition and with a stamped maintenance booklet. Carrying out the inspections also ensures that all technical actions have been completed. The double-R itself will probably never be a bargain, but it usually comes with many extras.
engine
For years, the BMW S 1000 RR had the most powerful super sports car engine, it wasn’t until 2015 that Japan and Italy countered. Despite nominally “only” The 999-cubic in-line four-cylinder regularly spread 193 hp in the direction of 200 hp. In the MOTORRAD endurance test, the engine proved to be stable over 50,000 kilometers, only the intake camshaft showed wear. In 2012 there were minor improvements in pulling power, engine characteristics and responsiveness, in 2015 the power increased across the entire engine speed range thanks to an adjustment of the timing, intake manifold and throttle valve bodies. The peak power climbed nominally to 199 hp, in the MOTORRAD top test up to 206 hp were measured.
landing gear
The upside-down fork and shock absorber were adjustable in terms of spring base, rebound and compression levels from the start, and they were already designed to be relatively tight at the factory. In 2015, the Munich-based company received a steeper steering head angle (66.5 instead of 66 degrees), less caster (96 instead of 99 mm) and 15 millimeters more wheelbase. In addition, the vehicle level has been raised by eleven millimeters. All of them small things, but all in all the BMW S 1000 RR is more manageable and quick and easy to change lean angles. A semi-active chassis with harder springs is now optionally available.
everyday
The S 1000 RR is particularly impressive in everyday life.
The big entrance of the BMW S 1000 RR: an eight-minute high-speed chase in “Mission Impossible”. The Bavarian super athlete can do it quickly, even at an incline. But everyday mission? In fact, the double R does astonishingly well here: little weight, various little helpers, an upright and even long-term comfortable sitting position. With a consumption of less than six liters for legal country road surfing and an automatic gearshift (subject to a surcharge), the RR collects further points in the chapter on everyday life.
security
Right from the start, in addition to (driving) performance, it was above all the issue of safety that set the BMW S 1000 RR apart from the supersport competition. The somewhat coarse ABS and the four-stage traction control of the first series up to 2014 were revised for the 2015 model year. With the surcharge “Driving modes Pro” you now also get a launch control, the automatic gearshift works in both directions. In contrast to the HP4, there was no corner ABS, but this will be on board in 2019.
