We looked at the bestsellers of the ten most successful motorcycle manufacturers in Germany and summarized them for you in the picture gallery. At BMW, the R 1200 R took third place in the R nineT (2017) in 2018, at Kawasaki the Vulcan S made room for the Z 900 RS, at Honda the 500 Rebel, and at KTM the 790 and 390 Duke are new to the top 3 and Yamaha is unchanged with MT-07, MT-09 and Tracer 900.
The top 3 ranking of Harley-Davidson has two newcomers with Street Bob and Fat Bob, Ducati one with the Panigale V4, at Suzuki it remains unchanged with SV 650, GSX-S 750 and V-Strom 650, the three best-selling Triumphs -Motorbikes swap places with each other and at Husqvarna the TE 300 is in third place instead of the FE 350 (2017).

If we look at the two parts of the market that affect motorcycles and light motorcycles, we see 7.4 percent growth in motorcycles and an incredible 20.7 percent in light motorcycles. Expressed in absolute figures: 7,453 more motorcycles were newly registered in 2018 than in 2017, and there were 3,033 more new registrations of light motorcycles.

Scooters and light scooters
The largest percentage growth in the two-wheeler market was recorded by the large scooters with more than 125 cm³ displacement and 15 hp: 26.2 percent. In absolute terms, this means: 13,838 large scooters were newly registered in 2018, compared to 10,962 in 2017.
In the case of light scooters, there is still an impressive 21.1 percent increase. In 2018, 13,502 units were newly registered, compared to 11,149 in the previous year.

Market shares
When it comes to motorcycles with a displacement of over 125 cc, BMW is ahead of the game, with Bayern losing 3.3 percent of the market share compared to 2017. Honda, which was in second place in 2017, also lost and slipped to third place behind Kawasaki, closely followed by KTM, the new number 4 in the ranking. Behind KTM, Yamaha ranks 5th (2017 still 3rd), Harley holds 6th place, while Suzuki climbs two places to 7th Ducati gives up one place and is 8th in 2018 Husqvarna on P10 complete the top 10.

In 2018, the naked bikes / all-rounders were the most popular motorcycles in Germany, followed by the enduros / supermotos in second place and the choppers / cruisers in third place – bring up the rear.

Federal states
No, the most populous federal state does not have the most new motorcycle registrations, but the state that is closest to the Alps: Bavaria, with 26,400 new registrations, is well ahead of North Rhine-Westphalia (19,674 new registrations) and Baden-Wurttemberg (17,401 new registrations). This is shown in the overview as follows:
