Tour tip

In the north the Salzburger Land, to the right of it Carinthia and below is Italy. Like a small remnant, Osstirol still clings to the Alpine republic. On the motorbike, they mockingly tell us, we had already explored the region in half a day. For real? We already reveal: This saying does not work. And that’s good!

There are no spectacular hairpin bends that are difficult to drive on this lap. You could almost say – Alps “easy going”, where driving fun on empty secondary routes with a single trail character is by no means neglected. And the routes in East Tyrol are not entirely without either, because faults, cracks of frost and slippery bitumen patches, especially on the ideal line, always require a keen eye ahead.

route: 600 km (with arrival and departure via the Grobglockner High Alpine Road) / Travel time: approx. 10 hours (without a break), 2 days with Lienz as the start and finish for the north and south circuit.

  1. To get to the Lienz base camp, we recommend the Grobglockner High Alpine Road from the north. Depending on how the further tour is planned, you can purchase a follow-up day ticket or the three-week pass (48.50 euros) for the return journey. Those who come after 6 p.m. also save. From Heiligenblut in the south we drive on the B 107 on the fastest route to Lienz.

  2. Our northern circuit leads from Lienz towards the Felbertauern tunnel. Alternatively, you can bypass the B 108 on a small, densely wooded branch line via Oberdrum. In Matrei we turn left into Virgental and at the end we turn back in Stroden. Back on the B 108, we leave it behind Huben and drive via Kals on the Glocknerstrasse, which is toll-free for us, to the turning point at the parking lot. Then it goes through the Defereggental to the Staller Sattel and from there back to Lienz.
  3. For the southern circuit we stay on the B 100 as far as Leisach and follow the signs there “Truce”. On the old post road we pass the Lienzer Klause and drive on the well signposted Pustertaler Hohenstrabe to Abfaltersbach. Continue towards Heinfels and right into Villgratental to Kalkstein. Back on the B 100, we turn off into the Lesach Valley in Cupsbach and tour back to Lienz via Kotschach-Mauthen.
