Motorcycles ride well and safely

A warm neck is not only good for your well-being on the motorcycle, but also for your safety. That is why scarves are also listed in this category. The sense of back protectors is obvious; Airbags in motorcycle protective clothing promise even more safety.

The following applies to all motorcycle clothing: Make sure that it fits as well as possible while sitting on the motorcycle. Then sleeves and trouser legs must be long enough, the collar must not be too tight when closed, and the crotch must not pinch. Not even with the right microfiber underwear. Is there still enough freedom of movement? The protectors should not slip even without a lining, because a width adjustment in the sleeve helps – or a stretch insert in the leather suit. If no back protector is integrated, it should fit underneath.

Textile combination: Pay attention to this

Collar: A high degree with a tight transition to the helmet is important. The collar should be easy to open and close, even when wearing gloves.

Modification options: Thermal lining and climate membrane (with the exception of direct laminate) should be removable. Large air inlets, which can also be operated with gloves, and adjustable straps for adjusting the width of the sleeves, legs and hips are also compulsory.

fact

There are a few basics to consider when buying a textile suit.

Bags: Numerous storage options just make it unnecessarily difficult to find. It should be at least two large, waterproof outer pockets plus padded inner pockets on the jacket.

Sleeve: Depending on whether the glove cuffs are to be stowed under or over the sleeves, a rather wide or narrow opening is recommended.

Front zip: One of the neuralgic points for water ingress. Make sure that it is well covered by a labyrinth that is not too bulky.

Transition jacket / pants: With good suits, jacket and trousers overlap generously on the back – even if you sit in a sporty posture. Ideal coupling: a long connection zip all around.

Protectors: The minimum equipment is certified protectors on shoulders, elbows and knees. Better: also on the hips and back. Check the correct seat on your own motorcycle!

Leg end: Generous opening so that the trousers can be worn over the boot shaft, ideal with width adjustment via zipper or Velcro.

Hose cloth

Hose cloths are available with and without a wind stopper. Here in the picture: hose cloth without wind stopper.

Tubular towels protect against drafts and (almost) everything else that you don’t want to get against your neck; also available with a wind stopper membrane for colder days

Disadvantage: The jacket collar must not be too tight.

Advantages:  Generally suitable, especially without a membrane, thin enough for the vast majority of jacket collars, universally usable everyday hero.

Sports leather suit

Protective equipment for motorcyclists

mps photo studio

For many the only true motorcycle suit: leather two-piece suit with connecting zipper, here the Assen model by Dainese. Chic even without knee sliders.

Disadvantage: Not waterproof. With an optimal fit, only thin thermal underwear fits underneath, protection against the cold should be on top.

Advantages: Still the best security, does not flutter even at high speed.

Motorcycle boots

Sports boots: Colorful, equipped with protectors and exchangeable sliders as protection in the event of a great incline, these are sports boots like the Nexus from Dainese.
Disadvantage: Perforated leather gives your feet wet when it rains, and wearing comfort is more optimized for sports riders than for everyday use.
Advantages: Well-fitting, ventilated protection for the feet, first choice for sports drivers, indispensable on the racetrack.

Touring boots on the left, sports boots in the middle, short or city boots on the right.

Touring boots with moisture protection membrane: Travel enduros are in, which is why touring boots with an off-road look like the Alpinestars Belize are becoming more common, here a version with a shaft that is not that long.
Disadvantage: Depending on the model, quite heavy and warm in summer, not suitable for indoor use.
Advantages: Feet stay dry, protectors ensure safety, large opening for easy entry, in black, universally wearable.

Short or city boots: You can hardly tell that boots like the Bogotto City Limit are suitable for motorcycling. They are not intended to replace touring boots, but rather to bring a little more safety to short trips instead of sneakers.
Disadvantage: Hardly or no moisture protection, and when it does, the water comes through the back door and runs in from above. No shin guards.
Advantages: Comfortable to wear, good for walking, but with well-protecting protectors, nobody has to ride in sneakers anymore.

Kevlar jeans

Jeans with protectors and reinforcements or made entirely of aramid or Kevlar fibers like the Highway 1 from Louis (in the picture after a MOTORRAD drop test from 80 km / h) are now almost full motorcycle trousers with comfort and safety.

Disadvantage: Protectors, especially on the knees, are not always secure against twisting, legs can slide up, not waterproof.

Advantages: “Civil” look, mostly more comfortable and airier than normal motorcycle pants, at least as abrasion-resistant as good textile pants.

High-tech protection and everyday benefits

The following shows items of equipment that too many bikers don’t really have on their radar. But a back protector is a must. And gloves are not only worn against the cold when riding a motorcycle, but above all to protect the hands from injuries of any kind, such as stones or insects flying around. Protectors and especially the unfortunately still very expensive airbag vests or jackets can provide effective protection against the consequences of a fall. The same applies here: an optimal fit is the key!

Airbag jacket

The current generation of Dainese D-Air jackets, here the Misano model, is triggered electronically, but is no longer connected to the motorcycle; Sensors, GPS and battery are integrated in the back protector.

Disadvantage: Only works with a charged battery.

Advantages: Offers extensive protection and a very fast response time.

Airbarg overt vest

The vest to be worn over the jacket, here the leather model from Helite, is triggered by a pull cord that is attached to the motorcycle.

Disadvantage: Due to purely mechanical activation, longer tripping time compared to electronic systems.

Advantages: Cheaper, does not require batteries or attachments on the motorcycle, extensive air cushioning.

Back protector to wear under

Protective equipment for motorcyclists

For jackets without a built-in back protector (or as a replacement for an inferior one), parts like the Held Shelter II are recommended.

Disadvantage: Has to be put on extra, can – especially as a vest – be sweaty in summer despite ventilation.

Advantages: Best protection for the spine, easy to fix, good fit even under the leather suit.

gloves

Summer gloves: Despite protectors, gloves like the Orina Spark allow enough wind to reach your hands so that no one has to drive without them even in the heat.
Disadvantage: Not all around as good abrasion values as complete leather gloves. Short models often with poor scraper protection.
Advantages: Direct grip, well ventilated, models like the one in the picture offer good security thanks to protectors, leather on the palm and locking latch.

Touring gloves, waterproof, long: Models like the Orina Blake take the horror out of cool, wet weather. Climate membrane, protectors and the adjustable latch for the anti-wipe protection should be.
Disadvantage: Depending on the thickness of the lining, the grip is limited, and very sweaty in warm conditions.
Advantages: Warm, waterproof, a universal talent in everyday life, see above for exception.

Sports gloves: Developed by and for racing, long-sleeved, tight-fitting gloves like the Held Phantom II are also at the forefront when it comes to safety and comfort on the road.
Disadvantage: Often difficult to put on due to tight fit and good anti-slip protection, of course not waterproof.
Advantages: With a perfect fit, they offer the finest grip and the best possible protection for the hands.

ear protection

Protective equipment for motorcyclists

Nicolas Streblow

Hearing is permanently damaged from a volume of 85 decibels (dB), the wind noise under the helmet can reach over 100 dB. Earplugs help here. They are available in pharmacies or in many accessory shops. Versions with a frequency filter are better, but a little more expensive – you can still hear what is important. Ideal, but even more expensive: custom-made otoplastics from the acoustician

Jacket and pants are still great, but the protectors are uncomfortable, too small, too soft or simply too old? The market offers plenty of retrofit protectors in various shapes and materials for every taste. Tip: For retrofitting, you should use certified level 2 protectors, exactly matching the respective bags.
