A recall that initially only affected the US market is now also taking effect in Europe. This emerges from a document from the EU Commission. This lists the BMW models G 310 R and G 310 GS as well as the two scooters C 400 GT and C 400 X from the construction period from April 2016 to August 2019. BMW confirms the “technical campaign with customer notification”. In total, BMW has to recall 32,813 vehicles worldwide, in Germany this recall affects 3,795 bikes. All owners of affected models will be contacted by BMW. The campaign started in mid-September.

The American traffic safety authority NHTSA had already announced a recall in August 2019 for the BMW models G 310 R (model year 2017-2020), G 310 GS (model year 2018-2020) and the scooter C 400 X (model year 2019). In total, the recall affects 5,938 vehicles in the USA. All owners of affected vehicles are asked to go to the workshops to check the brake calipers. If necessary, the brake calipers, which come from Brembo and are marketed under the Bybre label (stands for: stands for: by Brembo, the Indian offshoot of the Italian brake manufacturer Brembo), can be exchanged. In the USA, the recall is scheduled to start in early October 2019. At the same time, the Bavarians temporarily stopped the delivery of new vehicles in the USA.

Pistons can get stuck in the pliers

The reason for the recall is a possible corrosion of the brake calipers in the area of the non-anodized holes for the brake pistons. In the worst case, the brake pistons can get stuck in the calipers, impairing braking performance and leading to an accident. So far, BMW is aware of four accidents that can be attributed to this. According to BMW, under certain conditions (winter operation with a lot of salt) surface corrosion of the non-anodized brake piston bore in the brake calipers can occur. When visiting the workshop, the brake calipers on both axles are checked for corrosion and the function of the brake piston is ensured. If necessary, the affected brake caliper (front and / or rear) will be replaced. BMW estimates that the time spent in the workshop will be around two hours.

In the MOTORRAD endurance test, the rear brake calliper was replaced at 17,000 km.

The MOTORRAD endurance test BMW G 310 R was also affected by this problem on the rear brake. BMW replaced the entire rear brake system. A BMW spokesman told MOTORRAD in August 2019 that the braking system is also being checked on machines in Europe on a random basis. A recall for the European market was still denied at the time.
