The Fazer got there first. In the late 1990s to be precise as the FZS 600. This half-clad Yamaha became one of the best-selling motorcycles on the market. Rightly so, because the sporty Japanese with just under 100 hp is really anything but a boring middle class. The successor FZ6 – here in focus – has adopted these virtues and consistently continued from 2004 to 2010 (afterwards replacement by model FZ8).

As usual, with a half-shell fairing as the Fazer model that loves to travel, and since 2004 also as a lively, lively naked bike with 98 hp. The performance is shaken out by the water-cooled row quad with injection, which was taken over from the super athlete YZF-R6. The ABS (from 2006 for FZ6 Fazer, from 2007 for FZ6) certainly contributed to this. 2007 posed Yamaha the FZ6 also has the Fazer S2 model with a handsome aluminum swingarm and other modifications (see also under model maintenance) to the side, the “normal” The price of the FZ6 / Fazer was reduced by a few hundred as a new vehicle, but the output was also reduced to 78 hp. But as a somewhat listlessly throttled load, this offer hardly had a chance against the 98 hp S2, which from 2009 also appeared naked. Pretty, strong, still sensible – a great motorcycle. Meanwhile at attractive used prices.

The mid-range machine is powerful and comfortable enough to take passengers on a trip.

Good news for technically inexperienced motorcycle beginners: The FZ6 is one of those motorcycles where you hardly have to worry about weak points and niggles. Assess the general maintenance condition, search for signs of a fall (former driving school machines are often on offer), check whether expensive wear parts are due soon and finally check in the service book whether all inspection intervals have been adhered to – then buy, done. The reliable Yamaha is also often available second-hand with 34 HP suitable for beginners.

On the other hand, 78 hp machines are unpopular, and although they are cheaper for insurance, they are considered to be a little too weak on the chest. Most owners of such a specimen have, however, upgraded the power reduction via the gas stop, in this case pay attention to the corresponding entries in the vehicle documents. Throttling or dethrottling costs around 200 to 250 euros; if necessary, this item should be taken into account when negotiating prices.

Market situation

On the relevant Internet marketplaces there are comparatively many offers from abroad from 2000 euros (especially Italy and Poland, where the machine is very popular and widespread) that lead to a “Shopping vacation” animate. But mostly a long journey is not worthwhile, because many machines there have quirks and strong signs of use, which quickly put the supposedly cheap offer into perspective.

For a tidy and well-maintained FZ6 you should – whether at the dealer or from private – calculate better 3500 euros and more. There is a huge selection here, and it is easy to find your personal bargain nearby. The half-clad Fazer was more popular as a new vehicle, but the bare FZ6, especially the S2 version, is a bit more in demand as a used vehicle. Machines without ABS are out and can only be brought to men and women with a clear price difference to assist-braked models

2006 The new Fazer type RJ076 is upgraded with ABS and is available for 7,995 euros, the FZ6, technically unchanged, for 6945 euros. 2007 Model Fazer S2 (type RJ149) with ABS, new front brake, new aluminum swingarm as well as modified seat and lower footrests. Price: 7643 euros. the “old” FZ6 Fazer (type RJ148) only produces 78 hp and costs 7232 euros; the bare FZ6 (new type RJ14B), also only with 78 hp, now also has ABS and is offered for 6822 euros.

2009 New FZ6 S2 with ABS and 98 PS (type RJ14D). Price: 7,495 euros (7,995 euros for Fazer model).
