Do well – with this simple formula, the appeal is the Yamaha XJ6 which saw the light of day in 2009. That already worked 18 years earlier with the extremely successful mid-range bestseller XJ 600 N / S, which remained in the range for twelve years. This too did not promise great performance, nor did it stand out otherwise, and the two-valve engine also only revs up slowly. But the success proves right – the “Olle” is still approved around 28,000 times today.

The Yamaha XJ6 is considered to be an unproblematic motorcycle. The engine construction has already proven itself thousands of times in the mass production model FZ6 or originally in the sports model YFZ-R6, no weak points are known. But be careful with throttled machines with 34 or 48 HP: If the original throttle valve actuation is no longer available (often with 34 HP foreign imports), these have so far been neither available for money nor for good words as a spare part. Upgrading to 78 hp would then be very expensive.

With the many used advertisements, accessories are a bonus that promotes sales. For those interested it is good to know what is popular with XJ6 fans: filigree license plate holders (new from around 80 euros), seat and rear wheel covers (e.g. from Fechter, from around 150 euros), side case set for the Yamaha XJ6 Diversion ( from Hepco & Becker, around 600 euros). Rare, but attractive due to its sound and low weight: Leovince exhaust system (new: 950 euros).

Mutilated? You can easily overlook the exhaust, especially since the silencer looks more like a collector. The subtle muffler is well received.

“Driving license promotion price for new vehicle”, “44 km, 1st hand, like new”, “New vehicle from the authorized dealer, 1st inspection already carried out” – with such offers with prices below 5500 euros it explains why the comparatively young one Model is sometimes thrown away as a visibly used copy. At over 5000 euros, it becomes almost impossible for private sellers to get rid of their Yamaha XJ6, no matter how neat but just used. At a high price level, it is the clear majority of retailers who want to attract young customers in particular with Schnapper offers.

At the other end of the price range, under 3500 euros, the selection is much smaller, but these machines are in high demand. Higher mileages over 30,000 kilometers are more typical of the Diversion models, which are preferred by touring riders. With good care, such odometer readings are not perceived as an obstacle to buying by budget-limited prospects. Whereby: With a few hundred more on the bag, the selection of recommended Yamaha XJ6s is much larger. Many XJ6s offer between 4,000 and 5,000 euros first-hand with a checkbook and less than 10,000 kilometers on the clock, an excellent value.

2009: Launch of the Yamaha XJ6 and XJ6 Diversion models (half fairing). Type designation: RJ19. The engine is based on the four-cylinder of the FZ6, but has been trimmed for more torque in the lower and middle speed range with higher compression, slimmer intake ports and other cam profiles. Adjustable handlebar position. ABS available for an extra charge of 545 euros. Output: 78 PS or as a 34 PS throttle variant. Prices XJ6 / Diversion: 5950/6350 euros.

2010: The Yamaha XJ6 Diversion F model completes the model range. Except for the full fairing, the “F” does not differ technically from the half-boarded Diversion. In Germany only the ABS version is offered. Prices: 6395/6695 euros (ABS: plus 400 euros) and 7495 euros for XJ6 Diversion F ABS.

2012: Price increases: 6595/6995 euros (ABS: plus 400/300 euros) and 7795 euros for the Yamaha XJ6 Diversion F ABS.

2013: Minor model upgrade measures: modified side covers and new compact headlight housing (only on XJ6), new pillion passenger retaining bracket, instruments with LED lighting, modified seat cover, clear glass indicators. There is also a new model in the range: Yamaha XJ6 SP with a two-part seat, some parts with a carbon look and black painted wheels. Prices unchanged (price for XJ6 SP with ABS: 7395 euros).
