Which now? The R or the F? Neither, just GSX. Suzuki’s GSX 750 likes to get lost in the jungle of names and types, and to be clear: The model without any additional title is the naked one, and that’s what we’re talking about here. Because the sporty sisters GSX-R 750 and GSX 750 F are closely related on the engine side, but appeal to a completely different clientele. Those interested in the beautifully classic-looking Naked 750s are also drawn to other, extremely popular Suzuki sisters: Bandit 600 and 1200. The poor GSX 750 is totally drowned out there. You might think, but the jumble calls for clever buyers. As a new vehicle, the four-cylinder engine, which debuted in 1998, was actually in competition with the bestsellers, so it had to gain advantages through good or better driving dynamics. Compared to the 600 bandit, it succeeds without a doubt, because the 86 hp three-quarter liter engine starts much more energetically, and strong brakes ensure exemplary deceleration after sprints.

The chassis, with its perfectly appealing suspension struts, is easy on the fast country road gallop, only the fork springs that are too soft offer the usual modest performance of many inexpensive mid-range bikes. Speaking of price: Even back then, the GSX 750 was only slightly more expensive than the Bandit 600, but the bottom line was that it offered better value. After all, it found around 2000 fans a year until the end of 2000, and by the time Suzuki took the model out of the official range in 2003, a total of more than 2000 buyers struck again. And today? Since this motorcycle has largely passed out of consciousness. The virtues have remained: very reliable, drives great, pleasingly uncomplicated – a timeless motorcycle and a really good deal as a used one.

“The steering head bearing, of course!” – rarely do you have three GSX connoisseurs standing next to each other, but this is exactly what happened at a motorcycle fair. Said connoisseurs were used dealers and answered the question about weaknesses in the naked 750 Suzuki. “But no problem,” they said again in unison, because sensible replacements – tapered roller bearings from the accessories trade or from chain stores such as Louis or Polo – only cost around 40 euros plus installation (one to two working hours). The weak component is usually due every 20,000 kilometers. But that’s it with technical niggles, because the sophisticated four-cylinder is good for six-figure mileage with proper maintenance (oil change every 6000 kilometers, valve clearance check every 12,000 kilometers). Is all service work documented, tires and wearing parts okay, and progressive fork springs already in use? Then strike.

Nevertheless, the machine is welcome in the sales room, because in the price range below 2000 euros, the offer from commercial providers is usually thin, and the GSX is considered to be a problem-free, low-cost vehicle with hardly any complaints. Those returning to the sport who want to enjoy the motorcycle hobby without spending a lot of money are typical prospects. However, the majority of the offers are of a private nature – without any warranty obligation. Private sellers with high price demands (over 2500 euros) have only few sales opportunities, low-budget offers under 1500 euros in good condition, on the other hand, are not only interesting for beginners, but also for frequent riders looking for a second machine that is suitable for everyday use or a winter motorcycle.
