Granted – for Berliners, Brandenburg is a local recreation area. But even with a further journey, a tour to the Middle East of the republic is worthwhile. Especially off the big routes

Shortly after the fall of the Wall, a cartoon was made: It shows two enduro riders on a road covered with potholes behind the barrier to the GDR that still existed at the time. Says one to the other: See, as promised, an enduro paradise. Eight years after reunification, this “paradise” still exists off the busy main roads. The Senftenberg enduro region is well known among off-roaders. On former open-cast mining terrain, you can romp around legally in the deep sand (see information section). If you need to cool down afterwards, you can go to Senftenberger See, which, by the way, is also a former open-cast mine that has been invitingly converted nearby. Similar reservoirs line the route to the north. Here the tour also leads past some opencast mining sites that are still being dredged. Signposted vantage points offer impressive views down into the layers of the earth and over the lunar landscape that is created during mining. Entire villages had to and have to give way to coal. An impressive example is Klingmuhl near Finsterwalde. Once released for demolition, it is no longer worth dismantling today. Now people are returning, new houses are being built next to and out of the ruins. And then, around the next corner, the ghost is forgotten, the street disappears into a dreamlike avenue, flows into floodplains, crosses a canal. The Schlaubetal Nature Park, the Berlin Urstromtal and of course the Spreewald are located on the route through Lusatia and the east of the Berlin area. For a change, you can take a steamboat trip on the Scharmutzelsee, or you can stay in one of the numerous hotels in the Spreewald with their own boat dock and poke yourself through the countless branches of the Spree. The barges are not just a tourist attraction, they are also used to transport children to school, mail to letter boxes and some of them simply from A to B. Our tip: You can find quieter quarters in the Unterspreewald. What I said at the beginning still applies to the small byways and streets: With an enduro you are in the best of hands in Brandenburg and don’t have to turn around at the most beautiful corner because it bumps so much. But don’t forget: these are not rally slopes, but normal connecting routes. Appropriate driving style preserves the joy of each other and prevents driving bans, which are still relatively rare in these latitudes.

The tour described is aimed in particular at the riders of enduro bikes or at least comfortable road tourers. Although it can be ridden with any motorcycle, many side streets and cobblestone stretches can be enjoyed more relaxed with plenty of suspension travel. Sometimes a solid road surface is completely missing, and then with many athletes the fun usually stops. With a few detours, however, these sections of the route can also be bypassed.

Worth seeing In Neuzelle near Eisenhuttenstadt, the monastery is well worth a visit. You should definitely take your time in the Spreewald. Not only for boat trips, but also for the open-air museum in Lehde, where numerous fully furnished farmhouses give an insight into the life of Sorbian farmers in the past centuries. The church of the classicist architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel in Straupitz has its very own atmosphere. Activities In a landscape with lakes, rivers, nature reserves and mining, hikes on the often well-signposted hiking trails are of course possible in addition to motorcycling. Where tourism has established itself on the lakes, you can often swap horsepower for muscle power and pedal rental bicycles. Or rent a boat and row through the canals. Opencast mining is currently best seen from the road between Heidmuhl and Schwarze Pump.
