Practical test in business and city traffic

Now the time has come: Reason and madness, uh, Hyosung GT 650 S and Kawasaki ZL 900 Eliminator are finally ready to drive and are being sent out into the wide world. A commuter and a city traffic guerrilla got the two different machines home with them. Whether that went well?

MOTORRAD fleet manager Rainer Froberg, 49, drives over 100 kilometers every day with changing machines. He is excited about the sporty Hyosung.

I own a Harley Road King and a rare youngtimer, but unfortunately these chairs are not at all suitable for the daily commute. As a fleet manager, however, I have the freedom, uh, I mean, of course, the duty to extensively test various test motorcycles. It’s 52 kilometers an easy way from my front door in Ursenwang near Goppingen to Stuttgart-City. The path leads over a few small beetles onto the B10 expressway, from Plochingen there are often traffic jams, then I drive around the chaos on secret side roads.

Usual pace: from walking pace to around 130 km / h. Actually good test conditions. If a motorcycle interests me or makes me feel emotional, I use the way back with a few extra deposits across the Swabian Alb. Then I rewind to three digits and know immediately: piece of cream or cucumber. I take the keys of the Hyosung GT 650 S off the board, I’m curious. After all, we don’t have a plane like this every day. Colleague Luca Leicht, who pulled the machine ashore, raved about the young year of manufacture and the low mileage. Less than 5000 kilometers! In terms of the key data, the machine also makes a good impression, so it should bring me home safely.

“Okay in normal operation, rather unpleasant on bumpy roads”

But when starting the almost new machine behaves a little strange. I press the start button and: oddel, oddel, oddel – nothing. Again: oddel, oddel – again nothing. Only now do I realize that this motorcycle, built in 2009, has a carburettor instead of an injection and that it has to be started with a choke. I find it no longer up-to-date, but good: Choke out, oddel, oddel, cough, cough, brisk, hum – finally the four-stroke engine is running, albeit with a few chokes.

The soundscape of the two-cylinder is not that great, somehow rickety, but you can live with that. Out of town, everything is going fine at first. The machine is stable in an inclined position on the winding Weinsteige, and on the autobahn at high speed it does not twitch, wonderful! So: in normal operation everything is okay.

At the limits of what is tolerable

But up to my favorite routes on the Alb there are bumpy roads on which the Hyosung Immediately reaches the limits of what is bearable: Significant stand-up moment, the pressure point of the front brake drifts, when accelerating out in mountain bends it struggles, needs the speed whip too often. Not nice. In any case, I won’t take any more voluntary detours on the coming weekdays. I ask myself: buy something like that? The clear answer: no. For a good 2500 euros I could find a more suitable packhorse for my way to work, probably a well-kept Japanese moped. Probably a more boring and probably a lot older than the Hyosung, but the Korean exotic looks very immature to me and exudes too little flair.

Gerd Mayer, 38, head graphic designer, already has enough stress at work and does not want to waste valuable time during rush hour. The ZL 900 for him: a real test of patience.

My Kymco DJ 125 S scooter is a high-precision scalpel for “Operation City Traffic”. When the traffic light is red, drive up to pole position, when the light is green, jet ahead, and there, where I can’t meander through, I can’t go any further, even on foot. And now I’m supposed to try the Eliminator for a week. A stove that is completely out of place in the crowded city traffic. I am more than skeptical.

First impression after a test ride: heavy as lead, overpowered, unwieldy and also uncomfortable because of the ergonomically questionable, because oddly cranked accessory handlebar. The first few meters downhill through the quiet residential area are still going quite well, but on the busy district main street with tram tracks, which is used as a transit bypass, I realize what a block I’ve got tied to my leg. Suddenly appearing in and out of parking spaces and a pedestrian traffic light for a long time stress me a lot.

The stamp of the notorious lawbreaker

The excessive vehicle width, thanks to retrofitted ox-eye indicators, effectively prevents traffic jams from snaking through. Annoying high-frequency vibrations in every speed range, the sound a mere clatter. The elevator effect of the cardan brings back the year of construction. In addition, the car smells penetratingly of fuel. In front of the Wagenburg tunnel,
a notorious bottleneck in the Stuttgart rush hour, I am stranded completely. Zero getting through, I have to queue up behind all the waiting cars, man, I’m already late for work!

But there are other experiences too. I am inconspicuous with my Taiwan scooter, with the Eliminator? Not possible! She puts the stamp of the notorious lawbreaker on you. The ZL polarizes. Some frown, think they are totally wrong. The others think they’re cool. These are mostly people who were of legal age when “Mad Max 1” premiered in 1980. Like the driver of the artisan transporter who tries to persuade me to start the dragster at the traffic lights with throttle and thumbs up. I’m doing him a favor, because this outmoded dinosaur on two wheels has to be made for something.

“I want my scooter back!”

When the track is actually free, the Kawa is really fun. Martial shooting, full throttle forward, suddenly the engine noise is transformed into four-cylinder, four-stroke Dolby Surround. And it no longer stinks, it smells of gasoline. Although – pretty hard what rises up your nose. I look down at the fuel tap. The fuel spurts pulsating in the direction of the engine block, leaky membrane? Better to go to the workshop at the end of the business trip. I want my scooter back – less adventure, but also less stress.
