The first 2003 Zett? I loved her. The second from 2007 is actually still there. At the third I got out, and the last one was really too shrill for me. Design for design’s sake – that’s my impression.

Ferdinand Heinrich (29), high-speed intern: As the youngest member of the team, I will probably have to recommend the oldest Z in this trio. But to be honest: The design of the 2007 is still the most consistent – or now, over ten years later, it just looks right again.

Second-hand advice three years of construction Kawasaki Z 1000
2007, 2010 and 2014 models in comparison
The world’s sharpest edge has been in motion for 15 years. Well over 16,000 motorcyclists have since opted for a Kawasaki Z 1000. Time to go on a test drive with three different vintages. Which Z 1000 kicks the most: 2007, 2010 or 2014?

- Kawasaki Z 1000 from 2014
- Motorcycle conclusion:
The meticulous reader will now object: Why is an already facelifted Z and not the original model from 2003 running as the first in this triple used comparison with the 2007? In fact, the number one set a distinctive accent back then – we of course still vividly remember the extremely slim, stacked double-tube bags on the left and right.

Kawasaki Z 1000 from 2003 to 2009
With the 2007, you can see it clearly in the photos, you have these very noticeable at the time “Four-in-four”-Exhaust optics significantly reduced again. In return, it scores with a feature that used buyers should no longer do without in 2018: ABS! In conjunction with the radially bolted brake calipers, the Z 1000 from 2007 now also the greatest step forward.
mio-fotografie.de
From the 2007 onwards, the risk of encountering a specimen without ABS is very low.
Hence our clear recommendation at this point: If there is a cheap one Kawasaki Z 1000 should be from the early years, then only start looking for it from model year 2007. The risk of one “ABS-free” to hit is very low: officially only 16 copies were delivered in 2007 without the anti-lock device. The fact that the engine, which was not a real 1000 at the beginning but was borrowed from the super sports car ZX-9R to 953 cm³, lost two horsepower from 2007 onwards … That was only cut out at the top, and that Voting, which was under the sign of Euro 3 homologation (this also explains the fat pair of silencers), can be described as successful all round.
This is also proven by the performance curve from the MOTORRAD top test at the time. On the reel, the pre- and post-2007-Z 1000 separated a total of nine horsepower, but the young, supposedly weaker one marches out of the corner so powerfully that the underperformance documented on paper is anything but missed. You can’t say that the Kawa was cheaply pinned or sizzled together, but it is still advisable to take a close look under your dress and into hidden corners in order to track down rust spots and sins of care – especially if they are Kawasaki Z 1000 has already passed through a few hands and was maltreated as a year-round vehicle with a lantern garage.
Kawasaki Z 1000 from 2010 to 2013
The full liter? No, more than that. From model year 2010, the Z 1000 now lifts a full 90 cubic centimeters more combustion chamber volume to a four-digit level. Now, however, you look at the bare measured values and then ask yourself: Is it worth it??
mio-fotografie.de
The 2010 model is much more radical than the 2007 model.
First insight: The second in our trio group is much more radical than the 2007. One could almost say that it is based more closely on the original model again. But you have to put that aside quickly – the memory glorifies too much. It may have a lot more to do with the fact that the 2003 Z-1000 was simply a very radical new release when viewed in the context of the time, and that is why this term has probably stayed in the head.
The 2010s, however, is not a radical phenomenon, it is just radical. Because it turns the image of the previous generation upside down. The type of driver has to accept that. However, if you look under the microscope, the 2010s will not find friends everywhere. In addition to the significantly more precisely tuned drive block with the extremely short gear ratio, the chassis has also been streamlined. In tester’s words, that means: more manageable, more stable, more precise. All in all, this convinces types who appreciate the direct impulse and hunt curves with the Damascus blade between their teeth. Not so much for those who see the orgy of curves as a touristic tour – they will actually feel more comfortable on the Kawasaki Z 1000 up to and including the year 09. Because it is simply more comfortable. Period. And has more range. Period. On the other hand, the 2010 series scores again with the finer material battle such as the light aluminum frame or the finely made and practical eccentric chain tensioner. Final remark on durability: In the MOTORRAD endurance test, the Z 1000 performed almost perfectly over 50,000 km.
Kawasaki Z 1000 from 2014
The latest evolution of the Zett has been on the road since 2014. Even if it now clearly breaks with the very angular and also very clear design of its predecessors: The key data reads similarly to the 2010 version. The character is then also corresponding. For those interested, that means: Those who expect a bit of comfort when surfing country roads will not really get used to the latest edition of the Kawasaki Z 1000. If his home stretch is also covered with rumpled asphalt: let your paws off! You also have to like the stubborn steering behavior.
mio-fotografie.de
From 2014 there will be a completely revised model with new engine tuning and increased power to 142 hp.
On the other hand, the youngest member of our group clearly shows how the model character of the Z 1000 series has consistently developed. In this context, let’s stick to the much-used word of radicality when it comes to this model family. This gene distinguished the original Z 1000 in the context of its time, and it is part of the DNA of this series up to the latest edition. Thus, in the best Japanese tradition, one can bow to the Kawasaki engineers. Precisely because for 15 years they have never stopped sharpening the arrow again and again and placing it precisely.
Anyone who has matured with the Z 1000 as an owner will also understand the evolution of the 1000 more easily than an outsider, to whom the extreme design, also in terms of driving and responsiveness, seems a little strange.
In stark contrast to this is the comfortable design of the pilot’s seat. The humane ergonomics actually make it appealing to really eat kilometers with the Z 1000. Especially since it now eliminates the ridiculous 15 of the predecessor with a 17 liter tank and the kilometer range on country roads increases again to over 300. The oldest of our trio, on the other hand, cannot play such a comfortable note. You can argue about other gimmicks. The digital cockpit, for example. Even if it answers a lot of questions: The information processing is not exactly user-friendly. Just like the dim driving lights. The argument also works “LED” little.

As the youngest member of the team, I will probably have to recommend the oldest Z in this trio. But to be honest: The design of the 2007 is still the most harmonious – or now, over ten years later, it simply looks harmonious again. The 2014 model, however, looks very old after so few years. I find the balance of the elders particularly appealing. Anyone who is on the road for a longer time will really appreciate the comfort. Nonetheless, dear colleagues, I am still far too young to take it easy. So bring the Sugomi gun on!

What do I like about the 2010 Z 1000? The old rule of three: displacement, displacement and again displacement. The full liter, the formula always works. But I don’t want to talk about design in the first place. None of the three would have a real chance. A maximum of the first 2003 Z 1000, but the Lohse didn’t want that. Sometimes he doesn’t understand what we Originalheimers want. But the next time I meet my Japanese youngtimer friends, they have to explain to me what you have to smoke in order to come up with this Sugomi design.

Design for design’s sake – that’s my impression. When driving, you naturally get closer, it’s similar to having a nice drink in a local pub. Oops, how the young Kawasaki Z 1000 goes off. And is comfortable. Gas, brakes, everything is great. And as a Swabian h. c. Then you discover the unbelievable savings potential, especially those born in 2014 or later. Create, create, buy Zettle.
