Market reports - The motorcycle and scooter market is gradually raising the bar ... - The market is gradually raising the bar ...

Although still negative, the market confirms its semblance of improvement in March: in April 2009, the needle indicates -4.7% while the number of immats stands at 23,639. The year 2009 does not would it ultimately not be so catastrophic ?

The market is gradually raising the bar…

Weather question, the month of April was unique: dry and hot weather in the east, heavy precipitation on the west and south coasts … It is difficult to decide on the influence that the heavens have had on sales of motorcycles! We just note that overall, the temperatures were above normal, a priori facilitating the exit of the bikers.

We also note that the month of April 2009 had one working day less than the month of April 2008 (21 against 22), which mathematically would be enough to erase the decline of -4.7% in the market. But the dealerships remained open, from Tuesday to Saturday, the same number of days (22)…

After alarming January and February, the French motorcycle market is performing better and better. Admittedly, last month in France were registered "only" 23,639 motorcycles, that is to say 1,178 units less than in April 2008.

Nevertheless, among the 125, April 2009 was satisfactory since the sector recorded only a decrease of -2% with a total of 10 254 immats. Large cubes achieved a larger volume (13,385 immats) but their progress is less good: -6.8%, which brings them back to their – very good – level of April 2007.

Finally, the overall monthly drop of -4.7% confirms the "semblance of improvement" of March 2009 (-5.8%, read): the year 2009 would not be ultimately so catastrophic as that ?

"Governments use different approaches, depending in particular on the size of their market", explains Jacques Compagne, secretary general of the Association of European Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM). And according to him, the case of Italy is emblematic…

The establishment among our transalpine neighbors of a "bonus of 500 € for the purchase of a motorized two-wheeler not only has the merit of making the park greener and more efficient from this point of view, but has also vigorously reversed the trend of recent months, putting the sector back in The right way".

Indeed, after having completed the first two months of 2009 with declines of -37 and -35%, the Italian market rebounded in March with a surprising + 15%! It then managed to maintain its pace last month (-0.53% compared to April 2008).

The secretary general of ACEM, on the other hand, is astonished at Spain’s deafness, despite requests from its manufacturers and distributors. And what about France! Peugeot offers many recoveries or bonuses of € 300, but should the initiative not come from higher ?
