The motorcycle market still hibernates in April…
Cool and wet, April 2012 was not good for the French motorcycle market: 125cc registrations fell again by -22.9%, and even the big cubes followed with a disappointing -9.2 % … Review, figures and market analyzes on MNC.
The motorcycle market still hibernates
Last month in France, 18,767 motorcycles – scooters and motorcycles of 125 cc and more – were sold, or 3,111 units less than last year over the same period (read our). The market therefore recorded a further decline which accentuated the trend observed since the start of 2012: -7.8% at the end of the first four months.
Admittedly, the months of April 2011 and 2012 had the same number of working days (20) but at the same time there were two additional days of concession opening last year: 22 against 20 last month, or 9% of activity in less !
In addition to this statistical factor, the drop of -14.2% is also due to bad weather to say the least: "unlike March, across France, precipitation during this month of April was 70% more than normal, placing this month in the 5th place among the rainiest months of April since 1959", reports Meteo France in its climate report for April 2012.
This is great news for farmers, water tables and frogs, but much less encouraging for users and buyers of motorized two-wheelers, whether of the utility type or intended for leisure use.
The 125 cc sector continues to be more severely affected: the mandatory 7-hour training continues to limit the attractiveness of small motorcycles and scooters. Sales of these efficient and economical urban means of transport, which were so popular even less than two years ago, fell 22.9% last month.
It is hardly that KTM (+ 285%!) And, in a pinch, Peugeot (-8.9%) and Sym (-10.4%) which can be satisfied with their results. The other actors all appear in purple red on the Site control screens.
In the green for the whole of the first quarter of 2012, the large engines are experiencing a difficult fourth month (-9.2%) and go into the negative overall: 640 registrations are missing compared to 2011, so that the 40,000 units mark is no longer even touched.
The results of the manufacturers are clearly more mixed than in 125: last month, while Honda and BMW towed, Yamaha stagnated and Suzuki plunged. Likewise, while Harley-Davidson, Triumph and Ducati struggled to match their excellent 2011 scores, KTM progressed and Aprilia reappeared..
