Performance on the rise for 2017 Zero Motorcycle electric motorcycles
Zero Motorcycles brings significant technical evolutions to the engines of its electric motorcycles, with the key to a jump in torque and power of + 19% and + 11% respectively. The 11 kW flanged versions, accessible to B licenses, are also improving for 2017. Presentation and prices.
The Californian manufacturer Zero Motorcycles continues in 2017 the development of its range of – equipped with Bosch ABS, Showa suspensions and Pirelli tires – via a Z-Force motor with increased performance thanks to its "internal permanent magnets (IPM)" and its new controller. The torque of the Zero SR and Zero DSR, the most powerful models, thus increases to 146 Nm: "that’s more than any sporty petrol motorcycle under 1000 cc", enthuses its designers. !
Even the 998 cc supercharged 4-cylinder from the Kawasaki H2 takes a load off with "only" 133.5 Nm, just like the yet very torquey 1285 cc twin of the Ducati 1299 Panigale S which delivers 144.6 (read our )! The power climbs to 69 hp on the SR and DSR against 60 hp on the S and DS. Trails and Supermotard FX and FXS for their part develop 44 hp and 106 Nm with their lower power Lithium-Ion battery (6.5 kW / h against 13).
The, accessible to holders of the car license (B), for their part receive a much more compact and lighter battery: no less than "43 kg" would have been gained on this item! This appreciable gain also allows the creation of a lockable storage space. The quality of the paint and finish would also be increased on all models..
Variable autonomy from single to double depending on use
The announced autonomy varies from "130 km" to "259 km" for a Zero S, depending on its use (city, expressway, mixed). With the optional "Power Tank", the field of action gains between 43 and 66 km, ensures Zero Motorcycles. The new calculation procedure imposed by the European Parliament – Regulation 134/2014 Annex VII – indicates for its part results of "137 km" in mixed driving and "168 km" with the additional "Power Tank" battery..
Finally, the free mobile application developed by Zero Motorycles incorporates new features including the possibility of updating the internal software of motorcycles, without having to go to the brand’s points of sale. Enough to limit the activity of said dealers, already little used for lack of mechanical maintenance to be carried out on the Zero (no spark plugs or filters to change, or valve clearances to be carried out).
According to Todd Andersen, Vice President of Marketing, Sales and Service, Zero Motorcycles, however, the network would see "significant growth in volume, as we are attracting a wide variety of new drivers to this type of vehicle." In what proportions exactly, it remains a mystery since the brand refuses to give any information concerning its sales…
"Zero Motorcycles does not communicate on its production volumes or on its financial results", explained the head of the brand in France during our meeting. It is difficult in these conditions to gauge the real success of battery-powered motorcycles among bikers…
