Road rallies - Rallye de l'Ain: Julien Toniutti in front of the Corsican armada! - Course and forces involved

After a fierce battle to resist the Corsican pilots who came as conquerors and continue his comeback on Nicolas Derrien who started at the fault, Julien Toniutti leads his KTM 990 Superduke to victory and takes the lead of the championship. Report.

Course and forces involved

Fifth round of the 2011 French rally championship, the 73rd Ain rally took place under a summer sun which made it even more enjoyable. A superb race masterfully organized by the Union Motocycliste de l’Ain: you can feel the experience !

On the menu: a day stage with a long loop of 98 km to be covered twice, then shortened to 75 km for a third passage. Night stage: a long loop tour and a shortened loop tour. With two specials per loop: Challes (2.4 km) and Corveissiat (3.7 km), for a total of over 440 km.

The title is still within the reach of Julien Toniutti of Team Site: the official KTM France rider, riding his 990 Superduke, is 28 points behind Nicolas Derrien on his BMW F800R Panda Moto. Julien knows that he must regain 10 points per race on the three remaining rallies to complete the 2011 championship … but Nico does not intend to let it go and the battle promises to be bloody !

Bruno Langlois Stephane Ricciarelli

And in these forecasts it is necessary to count the Corsican armada, because the top pilots of the Island of Beauty did not come to make figuration! Bruno Langlois, winner of the recent Beaujolais Rally riding his KTM 690 SM (read) intends to reiterate his feat, accompanied by his "colleagues": Stephane Ricciarelli recovered from his broken wrist which prevented him from racing the Rallye de Corsica riding a Yamaha 450 WR (read), Paul Christian Piazza on Husaberg 570 and Carlo Scanu on BMW 450 GX.

The race promises to be thrilling and will take place with summer weather (for once!), Despite the rain dance performed the day before by a few spoilsports (Maxence Sonilhac, courageous "driver" of the Royal Enfield 500 and Dominique Subias, the no less valiant pilot of the Yamaha 125 WRX) relying more on fine driving than on big gas for big hearts !

Because of the big heart, you need it in these specials of a rather particular kind … Of course the first, Challes, is quite ordinary: short, two slippery hairpins at the start then a very fast row in the undergrowth, two beautiful turns with medium grip then a series of very, very fast descents and the arrival under a motorway bridge. It already requires a strong mind to pass very quickly in the descent, but the second, Corveissiat, is downright delirious !

The first third is quite normal, fast and virulent, while the second is a long row in an almost straight line in which we find ourselves at the bottom of 6 for long, long seconds … with a coating that is far from being one billion ! Bitumen fittings, melted tar, a few bumps, two or three nice courbinettes … All this thoroughly, to reach the end of the row at more than 200 km / h depending on the motorcycles! The best times here are reserved for those who have unplugged their brain before taking the start !

Recognitions for the Challes special

Thursday, very wise reconnaissance of the Challes special with the passages of three drivers who will be talked about: Paul-Henri "Tigrou" Sebe on BMW S1000RR, Nicolas "Crazy" Pautet on and Nicolas Derrien on BMW F800R.
