MOTORCYCLE tour tip – Southwest Alb
Between Stockach and Mebkirch

Tour tip

“Between Stockach and Mebkirch, there you can ride a motorcycle on small, empty streets. And the absolute top is of course the highest, Mamma Mia. But stay away from the hotspots on Lake Constance, they are totally overcrowded.”

Let’s see what’s up with the tips of a friend from the Black Forest, who is always drawn to the southwest of the Swabian Alb for a little break.

It’s all in the mix: sometimes cruising on quiet side streets or scraping curves, sometimes soaking up culture in places worth seeing, directly on the shores of Lake Constance or away from it “Swabian Sea”.

Route

  1. The starting point is the Bodman lido at the north-western tip of Lake Constance, from there into the hilly hinterland and heading north-north-east via Bonndorf, Ursaul and Sauldorf through the rural Linzgau to Mebkirch; Either visit the old-timer museum in the castle or travel further back in time to the Galli campus, where the Carolingian monastery town of Mebkirch is emerging.
  2. With a south-south-east course similarly winding as before, first over the forest and lime kiln down into the valley of the Mahlspurer Aach, then along orchards to Owingen and back to the lake. There is a lot going on there, both in terms of tourism and culture, in pretty uberlingen, at the picturesque pilgrimage church of Birnau and of course in the Pfahlbaumuseum von Unteruhldingen.
  3. If it’s getting late, take the direct route via Lippertsreute and Grobschonach to Pfullendorf. The pretty town with the historic center is only “in the second row” behind Lake Constance, but also far away from the hustle and bustle there; great motorcycle lanes are also waiting right in front of the city gate.
  4. A morning warm-up lap through the finely spun asphalt network between Pfullendorf, Krauchenwies and Ostrach, then south again – with the agony of choice: over the curvy Hochst, which promises driving pleasure, or parallel to it through the lovely Deggenhauser valley, the “Valley of love”. The observation tower on the Gehrenberg offers a splendid panoramic view, stop-and-go afterwards the shore of Lake Constance from Immenstaad, to be reached via Markdorf and Kippenhausen.
  5. A must-see or an escape reflex: Meersburg with its medieval castle on the steep bank slope and the New Palace with the Zeppelin Museum and all the other highlights is worth a trip, maybe even by ferry to Constance. But it’s also nice when you continue on your motorcycle, out into the hilly Linzgau and skyward on the roller coaster between Leutstetten and Heiligenberg back to Pfullendorf.
