Beyond Kassel

Tour tip

The season is slowly coming to an end and that’s why we want to do the full program again: slopes, soaking up the landscape and honoring roads in the Waldecker Land. The hills between Edersee, Diemelsee and Kassel are a motorcycle paradise.

Korbach: The district town of Korbach lies between the Westphalian Sauerland and the Hessian mountains, the starting point for our Waldecker Land tours. Overnight base: the historic hotel “Goldflair” with restaurant and beer garden. It is located in the old town (Stechbahn 8, phone 0 56 31/5 00 90, www.goldflair.de, “themed room”, double room 101.40 euros) next to “Kings Rock-Cafe” and the town hall. The town breathes history and the Eisenberg, Germany’s richest gold deposit, is nearby.

Bad Arolsen: From Korbach in a northerly direction to Marsberg. 20 kilometers later you reach Bad Arolsen, the former residence of the Counts and Princes of Waldeck-Pyrmont (castle tour and cultural events: www.bad-arolsen.de/de/tourismus).

Dornberg: From Arolsen via Braunsen, Kulte, Volkmarsen, Breuna, Escheberg, Zierenberg to Dornberg (579 m) in the Habichtswald Nature Park. Hiking paradise, glider airfield, the right place for active explorers.

Wolfhagen: From Dornberg via Ehlen, Merxhausen, Elbenberg, Naumburg, Istha, Altenhasungen to Wolfhagen. Half-timbered sensation. Then, as shown on the map, back towards Korbach. Variants welcome.

Waldecker Land Tour South

Distance: approx. 230 km / journey time: approx. 5 hours without a break.

Korbach: Small 72-kilometer warm-up lap: Leave Korbach in a northerly direction and head for Flechtdorf. Then: Adorf and Heringhausen. Here the Diemelsee attracts with a lido for a short cooling off. Stormbruch, Willingen, Oberschledorn, Lengefeld and back to Korbach.

Korbach: Now comes the main round: Leave the city south in the direction of Dorfitter. After 23 kilometers, it is worth making a detour in Dalwigksthal to the left of the L3076 to Lichtenfels Castle. Continue via Sachsenberg, Herzhausen to Waldeck, where you can stop at the cafe and restaurant Altane in the hotel “Schloss Waldeck” at lofty heights above the Edersee (overnight accommodation: www.schloss-hotel-waldeck.de/das-hotel).

Waldeck: Leave the village via the L3256 and cruise along the Ederseerandstrabe (L3086). Enjoy the views and make a short detour to Bringhausen.

Bringhausen: Back on the L3086 to Affoldern. Surf via Giflitz, Frebershausen, Frankenau along the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. In Frankenau turn north via the L3085 to the B252 to Herzhausen.

Herzhausen: If you want, you can return directly to Korbach from here. For everyone else, the small loop of 32 kilometers via Vohl, Sachsenhausen, Horinghausen, Ober-Waroldern to Korbach is recommended.

Korbach – Kassel (115 km, driving time without a break: 2.5 hours): For those who still haven’t had enough, a short route to Kassel is recommended on day three. The direct route from Korbach to Giflitz via the B251 and B485 is 30 kilometers. In Giflitz take the L3383 / L3218 towards Zuschen. The beautiful city of Fritzlar is ideal for a detour. The L3220 continues to Felsberg and the small medieval town of Melsungen. From here it is another 35 kilometers to Kassel via branch lines.
