Can 37,256 motorcyclists in Germany be wrong? That’s how many people have bought the 1200 GS since 2004. And they part – if at all – only for a lot of money from their sweetheart.

How do you make a bestseller even better? After 21,800 copies of the R 1100 GS and 28,800 R 1150 GS sold in Germany, BMW gave a clear answer to the question in 2004. “Outstanding off-road suitability with even better road properties” had the new one, according to the BMW press release R 1200 GS to offer. 13 HP more power in connection with significantly more revving and less vibrations (balance shaft!), 22 kilograms lighter, plus a tighter design of the spring elements and an optimization of ergonomics as well as a more comfortable seat – the new GS was able to do practically everything much better than theirs very good predecessor. At most, the 1150 was a little more powerful from the lower rev range, but the 1200 showed off with much more pressure from medium tours onwards, and it revved up significantly faster. There was also a lighter and quieter six-speed gearbox. The 1200 increased the neutrality and ease with which the first four-valve GS could be driven around even the nasty curve combinations. Most stooped people hardly had a chance on winding roads against a motivated GS. The first 1200s sold like freshly sliced bread, but in 2008 BMW went a step further: even more pressure, even more revving, an even better gearbox – and for 680 euros extra with Enduro-ESA, an electrically adjustable chassis with the GS rider can influence the suspension and damping characteristics while driving. Only two years later, even more was possible: The 2010 model was given the cylinder heads familiar from the HP2 with two overhead camshafts and radially arranged valves. In addition to more fire and ease of revving, there was a very significant improvement in this facelift: significantly more sound. An electronically controlled flap in the exhaust lets the GS finally sound the way it drives: simply awesome!

More than with any other brand, a comprehensible and complete service history is a very important checkpoint for used purchases at BMW. The Bavarians are masters at taking care of permanent model updates and “silent” recalls during workshop visits “on the side”. Here a small software update, there a little overhaul – a GS with a complete checkbook is always the better buy. But there were also very official recalls that, at least in theory (the owners concerned were written to), had to be dealt with for all used GS. Too many offers are the death of the private seller: There are several 100 second-hand GS in each of the relevant second-hand exchanges. For less than 7000 euros, if at all, there is only extremely high mileage or slightly damaged technology. The best price-performance ratio can be found around 9500 euros. Anyone who wants an MT model (model revision 2008) pays five-digit numbers in any case – which brings us to the problem mentioned at the beginning; Because many private sellers of pre-2008 treasures dream of five-digit prices (which is understandable, the new piece often cost more than 15 million), but in this area the air is getting very thin, because the oversupply is pressing on the ( Private seller) prices. The situation is significantly different at the (BMW) dealer: They usually ask for and receive very official tariffs, but can also score points with service and guarantee services and, if necessary, trade-ins.
