IDM Lausitzring 2020: Folger will stay in the IDM for another season?
IDM Lausitzring 2020
Folger stays in the IDM for another season?
At the third IDM event, Jonas Folger had a little more work than at the previous races. Nevertheless, the Bavarian took both superbike victories.

Jonas Folger didn’t know the Lausitzring until his start on the Yamaha: “The route is a lot of work for us”, Folger described his impressions. The partly undulating route in Lausitz demanded everything from the IDM drivers. But that doesn’t prevent the 27-year-old ex-MotoGP ace from keeping a clean slate at the third IDM event of the season. The Bavarian also wins rounds five and six of the season. That gives him the maximum number of points in the championship.

Like Folger, defending champion Ilya Mikhalchik struggled with his tires on a BMW. In the second race he almost got eliminated: “I had problems with the front tire in the second corner. I almost fell and then understood that I couldn’t get any further to Jonas.” A failure of the Ukrainian would have given Jonas Folger the title in the IDM premier class. But from halfway through the race, the 24-year-old BMW driver will manage his second position. This means he has at least a small chance of a title open. The other competitors have no chance of winning the title.
Luca Grunwald leads in the IDM Supersport 600

The two 600 championships are all the closer. In the IDM Supersport 600, Luca Grunwald has taken the lead on a Kawasaki, but only with three points ahead of Lausitz double winner Martin Vuginec. The Croatian celebrated his first overall IDM victories on the Brandenburg track. Just as narrow is Paul Frode’s lead on Honda in the IDM Superstock 600 over pursuer Jan-Ole Jahnig on Yamaha. Jahnig actually starts on a KTM in the Supersport World Championship. There he finished eighth in the overall standings last year.
Late starter Jan-Ole Jahnig with title chances
But the travel restrictions as a result of the corona pandemic led his team to change plans. Michael and Carsten Freudenberg’s team decided to use Jahnig in the IDM Superstock 600. At the Lausitzring, the Thuringian won the Superstock classification in both races. The 19-year-old goes into the final weekend just a wafer-thin deficit. Although he only joined the IDM at the Sachsenring, he still has every chance of winning the title.

In contrast, the gap between Rick Dunnik and Yamaha in the IDM Supersport 300 is greater than in the 600 championships. The 18-year-old Dutchman was able to top the table in the junior series. With his first win of the season, he has a points cushion of 15 points. Luca de Vleeschauwer, who won the first race of the weekend in the junior class with his Kawasaki, lost all chances of scoring points with a fall in the second race. Harry Khouri also has to bury his title chances on Kawasaki with two falls. The 16-year-old Australian came to the Lausitzring as the leader.
Success over world champions

The decisions in the IDM Sidecar were also extremely exciting. The eight-time world champion Tim Reeves and his co-driver Kevin Rousseau celebrated their first success of the season on the Adolf-RS-Yamaha team. But the second race decided Markus Schlosser and Marcel Fries in the LCR-Yamaha for themselves. The Swiss expanded their leadership in the championship.
Folger is an IDM fan
Like the events on the MotoGP tracks Assen and Sachsenring, the weekend was also the best advertisement for the highest series in motorcycle road racing. The superbike leader Jonas Folger is also enjoying the series more and more. The ex-MotoGP rider is aiming for a permanent place in the Superbike World Championship. It all depends on his wildcard stake in Barcelona next weekend. If he cannot recommend himself for a driver’s seat, he would be interested in another IDM season: “I really like it here”, said the Bavarian at the Lausitzring. “The whole environment fits.”
