Bulldog, what a dangerous sounding name for this good bike. The fan base sees it that way and usually calls the racing cruiser mastiff or simply doggie.

for whatever reason Yamaha the BT 1100 has given the nickname Bulldog, the bite of the air-cooled two-cylinder certainly can’t be. Because the V2 coming from the blissful TR1 and the straight-line XV 1100 Virago, which was plugged into a more curve-friendly chassis, is more of a relaxed surfing on the torque wave. With 65 hp from a 1.1 liter displacement, it is also clear that when shooting is about the moment and not the number. The V2 doesn’t like high speeds at all. If you want more steam, you will find it TuV-compliant at Krause-Technik in Dortmund, for example. At this point at the latest, the fork should be re-sprung in order to be able to safely master even bad tar roads. The original springs are simply too soft. Many Bulldog drivers are annoyed by the handlebars that are cranked too far back, which together with the immovable seating position is uncomfortable in the long run. The braking system, on the other hand, is beyond any doubt, as the pliers come from the company’s super sports cars (R1, from 2005 from the R6). And mechanical weaknesses of the BT 1100 are not known.

Bulldog ahoy.

Market situation

With around 4,000 copies sold, the Bulldog is not really exotic, although it is not on every street corner. Entry for an accident-free copy starts at 4500 euros. There are demonstration models for a good 7500 euros. The selection is quite large, many machines have been modified by Krause-Technik and have different fork springs.

sightseeing

In spite of the biting name, the Bulldog is very peaceable to those interested in viewing it. Thanks to high-quality materials and good workmanship, nasty surprises in terms of corrosion and wear are not to be expected. Initially, some of the specimens suffered from leaking fittings, which can be recognized by the fact that the digital part only shows confused values. Most of the instruments were exchanged under warranty. When converting handlebars, forks and / or carburettors, insist on TuV entry or take the original parts with you.
