There were many good reasons to switch to the first water boxer in BMW history after 33 years of air-cooled GS glory in 2013: more power, more revving, more high-tech such as the electronically controlled throttle valve actuation, commonly known as “ride-by- Wire “. Matching five driving modes, semi-active suspension elements (“Dynamic ESA”), new frame, longer swing arm, brighter light, better brakes, more comfortable workplace, cardan on the left instead of right, exhaust on the right instead of left – and anyway: everything is much better and much nicer than before . Everything is enough to take test victories and the previous BMW very impressively from a standing start R 1200 GS at the top of the admissions hit parade.

Well, and then in 2013 there was exactly one reason not to do exactly that, namely the new acquisition, (yet): the BMW banana factor. Of course, people in Munich will swear stone and leg that it doesn’t exist and has never been. And of course that every brand new BMW is released into the wild at one hundred percent maturity. And that any quirks are almost always unfortunate individual cases. More than a third of the GS new machine buyers surveyed by MOTORRAD at the end of the 2013 season saw things differently and agreed with the statements “… urgently needs fine-tuning” or even “… has unacceptable problems”. Shifting problems in the BMW R 1200 GS in particular annoyed customers. Broken switches, disintegrating fuel caps and annoying roaring noises from the drive train didn’t make it any better. That the transmission capitulated shortly before the end of the shift in the MOTORRAD endurance test was the icing on the cake of the teething problem.
Buy used? Without hesitation!
Now for the good news: The transmission exodus was actually an isolated case, and the BMW managers took care of the rest very successfully within the framework of model maintenance measures, “technical campaigns” (recalls) and guarantee or goodwill regulations. And so almost every used water boxer GS should work much better today than some of the almost new BMW R 1200 GS a few years ago. Buy? Without hesitation!

Who buys the water boxer GS at all??
As almost always with the BMW boxer: men over 45 who have always driven BMW and want something new. But also – and this is new for us – an astonishing number of brand changers, including three and four-cylinder engines, for example the Triumph Tiger.
And why do some of them sell the GS again after a relatively short time?
The BMW driver tends to change more often, and with the water boxer GS there have been further developments every year, for example the steering damper, then the larger flywheel and now ABS Pro – something new every year where customers say: ” Yes, I would like that! ”In the beginning, many customers bought demonstrators because they didn’t get anything else – keyword delivery time – but now they want the motorcycle of their choice – and buy GS again.
Buyer’s or seller’s market – how popular is the current second-hand GS? And what does the price structure look like?
Clear seller market. There are many GSs out there, but it has to be exactly the right one, the equipment, color and mileage have to match exactly. We have already changed colors here. If you are very lucky, the normal GS can be obtained for just under 12,000 euros, the Adventure barely under 15 million euros.
What can make selling difficult?
The less equipment, the harder it is to sell. Blue is not a big hit either. Conversely, the following applies: the equipment packages are always very popular, and so are some of the equipment tidbits, about the sense and purpose of which one can be divided, such as “Keyless Ride”. The shift assistant is also important for many, but unfortunately not all can be retrofitted.
What should interested parties pay particular attention to when viewing?
At the risk of not being able to hear it anymore: It is essential to have a complete checkbook and regular visits to the BMW dealer, because the service then guarantees that the machine is always up to date – even beyond the official recalls remain. Otherwise, make sure that everything is oil-tight and that everything electrical works – this can otherwise be really expensive.
